Emergency Nurses Association - Greater Los Angeles Chapter

10/05/2024

Hello Team,

AB977 the ED workplace violence bill has passed the California State Assembly. It has advanced to the Senate Public Safety Committee. The new chair of the committee has not shown favor on the bill.

The ENA has started a letter writing campaign to inform the committee how important our safety is to us in our workplace. Below is a draft text from the California ENA. I have included the link to the Senate Public Safety Committee and the portal to submit letters to the committee.

Please submit a letter as soon as possible, the deadline is May 14th. We need to unite protecting one another both in our ED as well as EDs across the state. This bill protects all those that provide care in the ED setting including RNs, MDs, ED techs, MSW, etc. making it a felony to assault or batter a healthcare working in the ED.

Below is the text from the ENA draft letter. Customize it for your roll in the ED or create your own letter encouraging the committee to support the bill.

RE: AB 977 (Rodriguez) Emergency Departments - assault and battery -SUPPORT

Dear Senator Wahab:

As a Registered Nurse working in a California Emergency Department (ED), I am writing to express my support for AB 977 (Rodriguez), which will correct an inequity in penalties for assault and battery against ED physicians, nurses, or healthcare workers. This simple measure will standardize penalties for a person committing the offense against a physician, nurse or other healthcare worker providing services within or outside the ED. I ask that you consider the impact that workplace violence has on nurses, especially the over 12,000 Registered Nurses working in California EDs.
Workplace violence against healthcare workers, including emergency nurses, has become a national crisis. Research has found that individual emergency nurses and other ED personnel experience a violent event about once every two months. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workers in the health care sector account for only 20 percent 9f workplace injuries yet comprise approximately 50 percent of all victims of workplace assault.
Additionally, a 2019 California Emergency Nurses Association survey found there is an overwhelming impressio11 that no punishment will occur for these individuals, therefore there is no point in reporting these incidents. Because of the acute stress related to these workplace violence incidents, approximately one-third of ED nurses have considered leaving the profession altogether, which will only exacerbate the nursing shortages and overcrowded EDs that are often a catalyst to workplace violence events.
Emergency nurses are disproportionately victims of assaults in the workplace. I ask that you support the passage of AB 977 (Rodriguez) to help address workplace violence against emergency nurses.

Respectfully,
Your name here, BSN, RN

Any of my pre hospital ans Emergency Department friends want to help out with the Baker to Vegas Medical (All Years) team supporting the B2V challenge cup relay race. Those of you not medically certified or licensed can help with the supply team. Hit the link below to signup.

The race is a 120 mile relay race starting north of Baker and ends at the Rio Hotel. There are 20 runners per team that need to be assessed after their leg of the race. Normally there are over 280 teams. We check for alertness and the ability to keep fliuds down. If they cannot, we treat until they can or we deam they need to be transported to a hospital and hand over care to the ambulance crews. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and hypoglycemia are common conditions we treat. There have been a couple of cardiac arrests.

In exchange for your volunteerism for the event , LAPRAAC covers your stay at the Rio Hotel , reimburse your fuel costs to and from Vegas and during the race, and gives you a $300 stipend for food.

The medical team members need to arrive in Vegas by noon on Friday March 22 for hotel check in and the team meeting in the afternoon . The race starts Saturday morning March 23 and ends on Sunday March 24. Your assignment will be about a 12 hour shift during that time period . You will covered until Monday morning to check out of the hotel.

Hope to see you all out there.
