These past couple of years have provided ample time and space for me to walk my talk. I've come to some new revelations about my life, especially when it comes to self-discipline and ritual. One of my favorite rituals has been to spend the last week of the year reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the new year. This year, I made a shift that has led to greater self-awareness. Not everything revealed was positive, but all of it was empowering.

This year, I expanded my reflection beyond the prior year into my entire life. I started by building a music playlist for my beloved sister Taryn, who passed away in 2018. Remembering her life through musical history evoked tears of joy and grief. Reliving the past through the lens of this cherished relationship helped me to gain clarity on the high points of my own life, and those times when I shined or retreated, when I clung to others, or let someone go.

I thought deeply about why I have made the choices I have made, especially about my career. I realized that my career has been essentially the sum of choices I made. When I examined those choices more closely, I clearly recognized that fear was behind every self-limiting belief that I have. These beliefs acted as a shell, that kept me in the safe zone. Many people who know me well consider me a work-aholic. They would be surprised to learn that I slack off quite a bit! In fact, I placed a premium on slacking, equating it with creativity, spirituality, and freedom--as a form of resistance against becoming worldly, superficial, and a cog in the wheel.

Examine the life of executives, celebrities, and intentionally high-impact people. Most if not all of them have a daily discipline that involves carving out quality time in each day to prepare and unplug from a day of giving their all.

Voila! Herein came my epiphany. My yearly ritual of looking back on the year and setting goals for the future was another form of well-intentioned slacking. Turns out, the thing I fear the most is a daily discipline and ritual. By doing it once a year, I satisfied the little voice inside of me that was screaming that I was doing it all wrong. My yearly routine quelled my inner voice for another year. And year after year, not much changed.

I'm overjoyed to report that I have developed a daily routine full of self-care rituals, time to unplug, to work at full capacity, and get a good night's rest. I observed what I seem to do regularly and enjoy, building upon that. I came up with a day that has 5 hours of self-care/exercise and unplugging/silence and meditation, 11 hours of work, with some of that time carved out for learning, professional practice, personal errands, and helping neighbors and friends when needed. I even included 8 hours for a good night's rest. I made a promise to keep the morning and evening practices 7 days a week.

Before I took the discipline for a test run, I reassured myself that this is a big shift for me and that I need to monitor my progress instead of expecting perfection. I acknowledged my fear that this may all be for naught. I may not achieve more success in 2022 as a result, or worse, I do and it goes to my head and I become that worldly superficial parasite I never wanted to be.

Recently, I reached out to the Gaia Foundation for a permission contact to quote Chico Mendes in my upcoming book. Sadly, I learned that Chico's legacy and the precious land reserve he gave his life for is under attack again. PLEASE HELP.

I was born in Caribou, Maine. I lived in a modest home on what seemed an enormous parcel of land. My sense of place is explained by a young girl's swing-set. Ahead of me, was a field of billowing grass that led to a row of great conifer trees situated to the distant left. To my right, a field of tall golden grasses where I imagined strong, young, native heroes rode gloriously maned horses ba****ck. I heard a local tribe lived over the rolling hill, but I never saw them. The sky above was domed by jet streams left by bomber planes that flew overhead from nearby Presque Isle. When the jets broke the sound barrier, the booms shook the ground forcing the legs of my swing-set to shake and leap from the ground. How do I know this? I was born with the memory, imagination, and observation skills of a writer.
Tomorrow, I will submit a book proposal to a publisher. When I asked myself, am I ready for all of this? The expression on my teenage face answered, yes, it is who you are and why you are here

For years, I have kept journals of intentional affirmations, prayers to Source and encouraging letters written to myself.

I wrote an intention in July 2019 to inspire stepping outside of my comfort zone. For me this meant finding ways to embody and express more fully who I am within myself, with others I am closest to, and those I would like to reach collectively. One of the first steps I made was to set up a new coaching business, but the Universe had other plans: COVID19 hit. Since then, time and space opened in ways that afforded me the opportunity to write the book I've always wanted to write, and with an excited group of supporters and entrepreneurs!

At this time I'd like to share my July 2019 intention for myself with you as a reaffirmation of the power of intention:

Once I embark upon this path I will be tested beyond my limits. I pray to withstand the pressure I feel when coming in and out of my inner and outer selves. May peace transform pain. Might my focus remain steadfast. I shall overcome impatience, distaste, and resist judgment. I pray for the strength to defeat the indefensible. Do not give up, stay engaged, take courage to heart.
