Self-invalidation refers to the act of dismissing, ignoring, or negating one’s own feelings, thoughts, or experiences. It involves undermining one’s own emotions and perceptions, often leading to decreased self-esteem and increased emotional distress. Here are some key aspects:

1. Denying Emotions: Individuals may tell themselves that their feelings are not valid or important, leading to a suppression of emotions.
2. Negative Self-Talk: Engaging in harsh self-criticism and rejecting one’s own accomplishments or abilities.
3. Comparisons: Constantly comparing oneself to others in a way that diminishes one’s own worth or achievements.
4. Dismissing Needs: Ignoring personal needs and desires, often prioritizing others’ needs over one’s own.
5. Impact on Mental Health: Self-invalidation can contribute to various mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It can also exacerbate conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), where self-invalidation is a common symptom.

Recognizing and addressing self-invalidation involves developing self-compassion, validating one’s own experiences, and seeking support from therapy or counseling to build a healthier self-perception.
