I am honoured to have been asked to share a stage and a special musical moment with Yoon-jeong Heo on 21st November 2023 for the East Asian Fusions concert series organised by Durham University . Heo Yoonjeong, one of the world's leading geomungo players, is a great inspiration especially with her stunning compositions. We met for the first time a year ago when I visited Seoul National University and we created a 5 minute improvisation. I look forward to sharing an improvisotary space together again. Thank you to the Durham University music team for making this possible!

Here is the description of the concert:

East Asian Fusions 1 // Geomungo and Bagpipes

Heo Yoonjeong, a leading exponent of the ancient Korean geomungo zither, meets Cassandre Balbar, a brilliant multi-instrumentalist specialising in bagpipes and recorders. Each performer showcases traditional repertoire, and then they come together, traversing time and space in a spirit of sympathy and understanding, and bringing their sound worlds into alignment. Fascinating new harmonies flow from this fusion – music to the ears, and resonance reverberating through the human heart.

Very excited to announce the wonderful Cassandre Balbar Music will be joining Sam Lee in the woods on 21st May for Singing With Nightingales!

Cassandre Balbar is a performer, an events organiser/curator and an academic.
Classically trained, she obtained her Diplôme d’Études Musicales in 2006. After many years of performing early music, she started exploring the world of folk music both through the recorder and the Galician bagpipes which she discovered during one of her many trips to Spain.
She is a prolific performer in many different kinds of traditions and her time in London has enabled her to widen her musical knowledge. She regularly performs with bands from different cultural backgrounds including Italy, the UK, France, Sweden, Anatolia and more recently North-West Africa. Her current projects include Världens Band, Amaraterra, Bonnendis, Follow the Rats and Vellamo Quartet.

Really pleased to be playing for the Musicport 2020 online event on 24 October this year! I'll be playing in a duo format, live from a studio in Hull.
And here's an image from the Världens Band gig at Musicport festival last year in Whitby, with Anna MalmstrÜm on the clarinet.
