There was no serious illness in either group in Pfizer's original kids trial, but there was an increase in related severe and serious adverse events in the vaccine arm. One of the vaccinated children is now severely disabled.

"What happened to herd immunity? Why are we still experiencing significant waves of illness if the vast majority of people have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2?

This is an important question that has no clear answer.

One likely contributing factor is "antigenic priming" (occasionally referred to as 'original antigenic sin').

This means that when the immune system is exposed for a second time to a downwind variant of something it has already developed immune responses for, it will recall that original immunity.

This can be problematic in that the immune system becomes 'trapped' by that original immune response and can't mount a variant-specific response to the more recent variant.

We are already seeing evidence of 'antigenic priming' in clinical research after COVID-19 genetic vaccines. It's difficult to say what this will mean, but it has the potential to have a devastating effect on herd immunity.
