In honor of National School Counseling Week, Mrs. Elma Compean, LPC for RGCGISD, visited the DAEP to speak to the students about the important role school counselors play in their lives. Mrs. Compean encouraged the students to visit with their school counselors whenever they have any issues, whether it be school related or personal. Mrs. Laura Barerra, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Mrs. Elma Compean for coming to speak to the students at the DAEP. Also, they would like to wish all counselors a Happy National School Counseling Week
On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Staff Sgt.
Marcus Cavazos visited the DAEP center to discuss the different opportunities available to them through the Army. He discussed the requirements, benefits, and college opportunities through the Army. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Staff Sgt cavazos for taking the time to speak to our students to let them know of what is available to them. Also, they would like to thank him for his service to our great nation.
DAEP/C2B Center would like to thank our fantastic counselor, Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, for the amazing job he has done with the students at the center. He is a superhero dedicated to meeting our students’ needs. Thank you for everything that you do. You are truly appreciated
The Honorable Baldemar Garza, 229th Judicial Court Judge, and his staff visited the DAEP on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Judge Garza spoke to the students about his humble beginnings , growing up with limited resources, but through hard work “ganas” and dedication, he became the man he is today . He stressed to the students that they can become anything they want in life, as long as they have the will and determination to do it. He told them that the only ones holding them back are themselves. His staff then shared about their careers as well. Eduina Ramos, court administrator/interpreter, Vanessa Carranza, court reporter, Marissa Trevino, court coordinator, and Roel Marichalar, court bailiff, spoke to the students about their duties and responsibilities in their respective jobs in the Court. Mrs. Laura Barrera , principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank the Honorable Judge Garza and his staff for coming to the DAEP to speak to the students.
Staff Sergeant Medina and other Marines visited the DAEP on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 to let the students know about the different opportunities available to them through the Marines. He discussed the educational benefits, qualifications, and the recruit training program. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Staff Sergeant Medina and his crew for coming to speak to the students. Furthermore, they would also like to thank them for their service to our great nation.
On Monday, January 22, 2024, Mrs. Cathy Rubio, Director of the Kelsey Bass Museum, visited the students at the DAEP. She presented to the students on the history of Rio Grande City, talking about the rich history of the community. She showed the students some of the artifacts that are on display at the museum. Mrs Rubio encouraged the students to visit the museum when they get the chance to learn more about the history of the community. The museum is opened Monday-Friday, from 9:00am-12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm-4:30 pm. Mrs. Rubio gave the students pencils, emblazoned with the museum’s logo and a goodie bag. She also gave the teachers a cup with the city’s downtown logo filled with some candies and supplies. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Mrs. Cathy Rubio for coming to speak to the students at the DAEP.

In honor of Martin Luther King Day , students in Mr. Guerra’s guidance classes worked on an activity in which they wrote about their dreams for themselves, for their families, for their communities, and for their schools. .
On Thursday, November 9, 2023, Mr. Daniel Ariel Guerra and his crew from AEP visited the students at the DAEP. They presented to the students about their jobs, requirements, benefits, and other pertinent information. They encouraged the students to pursue careers they are passionate about. The AEP crew gave a live demonstration to the students as to what it is that they do. They also gave the students a pair of sunglasses, pen and pencils, and a brochure on electrical safety. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, would like to thank the AEP crew for coming to speak to the students.
On October 31, 2023 (Halloween) the faculty and staff at the DAEP celebrated birthdays for the months of September and October. Some of the faculty got into the Halloween spirit by sporting costumes/Halloween attire. Happy birthday to those who had a birthday. Wishing you many more.
Today marks the beginning of Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign to raise drug awareness. In honor of this campaign, juvenile probation officer, Rene Garcia, presented to the students at the DAEP the dangers of drugs, including va**ng and fentanyl. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Dr. Karina Garcia, acting director for substance, for facilitating this presentation, and Mr. Garcia for the valuable information he shared with the students.
On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, DPS Agent Victor Morris visited the DAEP to address the students. He spoke to them about his career, serving in the military, having done two tours in Desert Storm, and working for DPS for 25 years. He talked to them about some of his personal trials and tribulations, encouraging the students to seek help when needed, such as counseling. Furthermore, Mr. Morris, gave the students some motivation and encouragement, telling them that it is up to them to make better choices and better their lives. His theme was about personal responsibility and accountability—don’t blame others for one’s mistakes. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, would like to thank Mr. Morris for taking the time to come speak to the students. Also, they would like to thank him for his service.
In honor of Boss’s Day/Principal Month, the faculty and staff at the DAEP presented their awesome boss/principal with a token of appreciation for her hard work and dedication. Thank you for all you do for the DAEP. We appreciate you.
La Casita FD visited the DAEP on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. They talked to the students about the importance of fire safety. They also talked about their careers as firefighters. They went over the qualifications and requirements and the joys of being firefighters. They also provided motivation to the students by stressing the importance of learning from their mistakes and not letting those mistakes define them. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Fire Chief Morales and his staff for taking the time to address the students. They would also like to thank them for their service to the community.
On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the DAEP hosted a Career and Technology fair. Programs from Rio Grande City High School and Grulla High School were showcased: barber, cosmetology, culinary arts, health sciences, and law enforcement. The students walked around to the different stations and interacted with the instructors and students enrolled in those program to get information about their particular programs. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor would like to thank the instructors and students for coming over to the center to share their experiences with their students. Also, they would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Adelina Villarreal, CTE Director and her staff, for facilitating this wonderful event.
The faculty and staff at DAEP/Chance2B presented their great custodians, Esmeralda Hernandez and Maria Garza, with a token of appreciation for Custodians Day. We would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication in keeping the center clean and orderly. You are truly appreciated.
The faculty and staff at DAEP/Chance2B wore green for Start With Hello week as a symbol of unity, inclusivity, and solidarity with Sandy Hook Promise. Sandy Hook Promise is an organization that focuses on promoting the safety and well being of students through educational programs and resources.
In honor of National Security Officer Appreciation Week, the faculty and staff at DAEP/Chance2B presented their security guard, Mr. Paulin, with a token of appreciation. We would like to thank Mr. Paulin for all the amazing work he does in keeping the students and staff safe.
On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, Ms. Melisandra Mendoza, local attorney, visited the DAEP to talk to the students about several issues affecting the youth, such as va**ng and other drugs, sexual harassment, and smuggling. She also motivated the students to want to do the best for themselves for a better life and future. She stressed that the only way to do that is through hard work, dedication, and education. She spoke about her humble beginnings and her journey that led her to ultimately become an attorney. She presented the students with calendars with motivational quotes on them. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Ms. Mendoza for taking the time to come the center and speak to the students. They would also like to thank her for the calendars she gave to the students.
September is National Su***de Prevention Month. Dr. Karina Garcia, acting director for substance and intervention, presented to the students at the DAEP on the warning signs of su***de, what to do and say if someone expresses suicidal thoughts, and the crisis hotline (988). If you or anyone you know is struggling, there is help out there. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Dr. Garcia for coming to talk to the students about this important matter.
Today kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month. Some faculty at the DAEP wore attire to celebrate this. They were treated to some delicious conchas. The students will learn about various notable Hispanic figures and their contributions to society, such as Frida Kahlo, Jaime Escalante, Gen. Ricardo Sánchez, Sandra Cisneros and many others.
This week is Su***de Prevention Week. If you or someone you know is struggling with your mental health or are experiencing suicidal thoughts, reach out to someone. Help is available. The su***de crisis hotline number is 988. Remember, you are enough, you matter, and you are not alone.
On Friday, September 1, 2023, Dr. Karina Garcia, Acting Director for Intervention and Prevention, visited the DAEP to present to the students on a very important topic: va**ng. She discussed the health effects of va**ng and the legal consequences for students if caught with certain v**e pens. Mrs. Laura Barrera, principal, and Mr. Orlando Ariel Guerra, counselor, would like to thank Dr. Garcia for coming to the DAEP to share this valuable information with the students.

We are excited to introduce the faculty and staff at the DAEP/Chance2B Center. We are excited to meet the needs of our students and help them transition successfully back to their home campuses. Also, we are eager for Chance2B students to earn their credits so they can graduate high school and plan for a successful life, post high school.
