The Warkentin House Museum in Newton, Kansas was the home of Bernhard and Wilhelmina Warkentin. Bernhard had come to the US from Altonau in the Ukraine and had encouraged other Mennonites to migrate to Kansas. A highly successful miller, he built this Victorian home in 1886 - 87. He died from an accidental gunshot on a trip in the Holy Land in 1908, but Wilhelmina continued to live in the home until her death in 1932.

ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK

This week's artifact is a Model 1905 Three Inch Field Gun. It was used in both World War I and II. Over 21,000 1905s were built. This gun weighed 3400 pounds. It was pulled into position initially by horses, and later by Artillery Tractors. The 1905 had a range of 7500 yards. This particular gun was previously housed at the Liberal, Kansas Armory. It was restored by members of the Kansas Army National MATES at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Stop by the museum and see this and many other amazing artifacts that tell the story of the Kansas National Guard!

ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK

M220A2 TOW Anti-Tank Guided Missile

TOW stands for Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided. This is not a "fire and forget" weapon. The target must be kept in the shooter's line of sight until the missile makes impact.

The M220A2 was used initially in the Vietnam War. Most notably, the TOW was used in Iraq in 2003 to take out Uday and Qusay Hussein.

This particular TOW was used to train crews of the 137th Infantry and 635th Armor Regiments of the Kansas Army National Guard.

Come out to the Museum of the Kansas National Guard to see this TOW and many other amazing artifacts that tell the story of the Kansas National Guard!
