'Hearing the buzz of a notification, you're gone': Why children are struggling to read A Four Corners investigation finds there are growing fears among education experts that screen time is contributing to a generation of skim readers with poor literacy, who may struggle to gain employment later in life as low-skilled jobs disappear.

Flashback to our 1st day back to school in 2022! I am thankful that we have made progress since then :)

Welcome back, everyone!
I hope you all enjoyed a super summer school holiday!
In a few days, the 2023 school year will kick off! BEAM tuition, however, will resume in Week 2!

Old students: I have sent everyone an email and a messenger message to better explain a few changes for this year!
New students: I have sent everyone a messenger message with a couple of instructions :)

Thank you in advance for your support of BEAM tuition this year!

BEAM tuition – Esperance was established in 2020. We have provided English and Maths tuition to many students ever since! We are blessed with growing numbers and need to employ additional tutors to meet demand.

If you or someone you know are an enthusiastic, qualified, and reliable teacher with Primary &/or Secondary teaching experience, we would like to hear from you. If, in addition to the before mentioned criteria, you also have a knack to connect with young people; empower their confidence as well as strengthen their numeracy and literacy skills, we would especially love to hear from you.
We offer a competitive rate of pay, a tutoring venue, most resources and administration support.
Please contact BEAM tuition - Esperance on FACEBOOK via DM to discuss this job offer further OR send your CV to [email protected]

True!!

Welcome back to school everyone. Term 4. The fourth and final term of an interesting year that started with face masks and mandatory days off school if Covid decided to join your household! I wish each and everyone a successful burst of brilliance as we head into the last leg of of this race that we call 2022.

A friendly reminder that our classes are starting Week 1, THIS week, TODAY :) - but there will be NO classes in Week 10.

Welcome to Term 3.

Whoo-hoo! Book Week term! Costumes, favourite books and characters galore!
I thought I would put these statistics up as some food for thought...

Please note that we will resume BEAM tutoring in Week 2. Week 2 - 10 this term.

Have a fantastic term all!

Sometimes students find it hard to understand WHY they need to learn certain concepts. Making learning as relevant as possible to real-life use can help. E.g. explaining which trades may use formulas for perimeter and area etc. Poor Susan! 😉🙃

Please note: BEAM Term 2 classes return as follows:

Week 1
NO Tuesday classes
ONLY Wednesday and Thursday classes

Week 2-9
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as per usual

Week 10
ONLY Tuesday classes - NO Wednesday and Thursday classes

Interesting article to read and great visual reminder...

Did you know that a 3-year old (top left image) and a 6-year old (top right image) have significantly different skeletal structure in their hands?! Notice the bones in the wrist of the 3-year old -- many of them are still mostly cartilage! Look at all the spaces in between the bones where muscles and tendons will change through the years. Even the difference between a 6-year old and a 14-year old (lower right) is huge!

Preschoolers have SO much development to do before they can write the way school-aged children or adults can!

Please do NOT stress if your preschooler does not want to write or draw. Some love it and some don't.

While they are growing, strengthen those little bones and muscles! Here are some great pre-writing, muscle-strengthening activities:

* painting, drawing, coloring
* playdough
* tearing and cutting
* gluing
* poking holes in things (try toothpicks and paper!)
* digging in dirt
* building with LEGOS, marble runs, or other blocks
* beading (try beads, cut straws, or even bobbins!)
* puzzles
* squeezing (try stress balls, squeezing water in a sponge, or using a pipette)
* picking up and throwing balls (use different sizes!)
* playing with toys (watch what their little fingers do when they pick up and move little cars, marbles, action figures, etc!)
These all strengthen and help develop little hands, muscles, and bones. When they are physically ready to write, it will be so much easier than if they were pushed when they didn't want to and weren't ready!

Learning about decimals always seem easier to understand when it is related to dollar$ and cents...

Check 1: Do I understand the question?
Do I understand the meaning of all the words? If not, then ask :)

Always a very useful strategy...To use print that is availble nearby to help confirm spelling!

Wishing all our Year 3's, 7's and 9's the very best of luck for Naplan testing this week and next! Even the Year 12's are writing their EST's. Give every test your best shot. Budget your time, leaving enough time to double check your answers. Always try and answer every question - even if you have no idea how to approach it. Having a go is the most important part.

There is also many practise tests available for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 by following this link.

https://www.acara.edu.au/assessment/naplan/naplan-2012-2016-test-papers

My advice: Please try not to make a huge fearful deal of "NAPLAN" - just refer to it as some additional practise or homework. I used to get so worked up and anxious before and during tests that I totally underperformed. These standardised tests are aimed at gauging the knowledge students have gained since starting school.

Students in Years 7 and 9 will do their four NAPLAN Online tests between Tues 11 May and Thurs 20 May. 💻

Practice tests are available to the public here: https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

Over the next week all students in Year 7 will have the opportunity to look at the online practice tests to ensure they are comfortable with the new test environment. 👍
