To decrease falls among elderly
Four things you can do to prevent falls:
1. Begin an exercise program to improve your leg strength and balance
2. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medications
3. Get annual eye check ups and update your eyeglasses
4. Make your home safer:
- Removing clutter and tripping hazards
- Putting railings on all stairs and adding grab bars in thee bathroom
- Having good lighting especially on stairs
Common Risks of Falls:
- Foot problems
- Environmental hazards
- Lack of exercise
- Side effects of medications
- Poor vision of hearing
What To Do If One Falls
1. Stay calm and do not panic
2. Assess the situation and check for injuries
3. If they wish to get up, help them get off the floor slowly
4. If at any point they are in pain or stuck, Stop
5. If they are unable to get up, call an ambulance
How to Properly Size a Cane
1. Wearing your shoes, naturally stand upright
2. Put your arms to your side with a natural bend at the elbow
3. Have someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor. This measurement is the height your cane should be set at.
