Differential heat treatment is a bladesmithing process where certain areas of the blade are made harder than the other. This allows the blade to have flexibility, while keeping the strength of the cutting-edge. This ability makes single-edged blades, such as the Japanese katana, especially powerful.

Regardless of the unfortunate circumstances around the pandemic, our sub-teams have been working passionately and are excited to share their projects with you!
The blade sub-team has released their design for the UBC Volcan blade! After thorough research, the team has determined the shape and dimensions for meeting the Volcan blade’s aesthetics and mechanical purposes. The forge sub-team explores the science behind forging a blade in their project, showcasing how different temperatures have different effects on the material sample.
