Congratulations to our sister Catherine Davis for being recognized by the River Road African American Museum as being instrumental in educating youth about Black History and as a Living Legend!!!
We are so honored to be blessed with your presence and wealth of knowledge!!๐๐
We're giving this trailblazer her flowers today! Do you know about Catherine Davis? She taught the first program in 1972 at Donaldsonville High. This was the first program in Louisiana. She was also the first Black woman to serve on the Ascension Parish School Board in 1991. She served for 24 years.
On Saturday, Bi Parish Bayou celebrated our Annual Black History Program at New Belmont Baptist Church in Labadieville, LA.
This year's theme was Black Resistance: Thriving Against All Odds with a focus on Black-owned family businesses in both Assumption and Ascension Parishes.
We would like to express a huge thank you to our dynamic guest speaker, Mr. Darryl Hambrick, who is a successful, serial entrepreneur. He is the CEO/owner of Hambrick's Family Mortuary, Co-Founder and Director of the River Road African American Museum located in Donaldsonville, LA, and President of R. Rayborn Private School.
Mr. Hambrick gave a phenomenal speech on how important it is to continue his family's legacy but also the importance of continuing to impact the black community and state, serving as a positive role model for future business leaders.
In addition, our other Black-owned family businesses that were acknowledged were the Williams - Southall Family and the Owens Family.
We also would like to congratulate and say thank you to all of our wonderful local youth program participants for a job well done and to all who came out to support and honor our Black History.๐คโค๏ธ๐๐
Black History Month 2023. The theme Black Resistance highlights the institutions and affiliations [that] have lobbied, litigated, legislated, protested, and achieved success.
To resist means to refuse to comply; to challenge the system. Resistance is the meaningful, lasting change created through action such as protests, faith, education, health care, sports, music, and politics can not be understated.
"And so, lifting as we climb, onward and upward we go, struggling and striving, and hoping that the buds and blossoms of our desires will burst into glorious fruition ere long. With courage, born of success achieved in the past, with a keen sense of the responsibility which we shall continue to assume, we look forward to a future large with promise and hope. Seeking no favors because of our color, nor patronage because of our needs, we knock at the bar of justice, asking an equal chance.โ ~ Mary Church Terrell ๐
Let us never forget the sacrifice that Dr. King gave to fight against inequalities and injustice both here in America and abroad.
How are you honoring Dr. King's legacy today?

As part of NAUW's HBCU Support Initiative, Bi Parish was proud to co-sponsor and chaperone Junior and Senior students from Assumption High School to Southern University Jag Preview Day!
๐๐๐๐
Students truly enjoyed themselves and several are planning to attend SU after this experience.
All students were given a campus tour, information about admissions and academic majors, a Jag swag bag with Tshirt, lunch and attended a SU football game to cheer on the team and hear the sounds of the SU Human Jukebox.
Bi Parish President, Denise Roberts and 1st President, Anthanette Thomas both volunteered as chaperones. Nena Verrett Gipson, 2nd Vice President, worked the event as a staff member of SU Intramural Sports. And over 90% of Bi Parish members are proud SU grads and many gave individual donations as well.
Special thanks to SU alumni Kimberly Fobbs for coordinating the trip and Troy Brown for providing transportation, Heather Freeman, SU Director of Admission and AHS alum. And many thanks for the generous donations by others in the community to support the trip.
