Pitta’s love compliments! 🥰

29/03/2021

Ever stay in bed past 8:00 am and wonder why you are so tired and groggy for the rest of the day? You have slept into the Kapha time which has the qualities of heaviness and lethargy. Plan your day accordingly and make sure to be in bed before 10:00pm. Otherwise the Pitta mind sets in. These time repeat twice daily. AM/PM

Much like our circadian clock, the Ayurvedic clock links our physiology to nature and dictates when different functions of the body and mind are at their most optimal performance. We can use the Ayurvedic clock to leverage our ability to focus and to tap into our creativity when these energies are at their peak!

WHAT CAUSES NECK PAIN?
Neck pain—we’ve probably all experienced it at some point. Strained muscles stemming from poor posture or awkward sleeping positions often cause it.

While your average neck pain will resolve itself in a few days or after a good session of yoga, when neck pain is chronic its often caused by degeneration of the bones, discs, and cartilage. The cartilage that cushions the area between each bone and joint degenerates and there is loss of motion, stiffness, shooting pain, numbness and even headaches. Degeneration of the cartilage is caused by wear and tear, and mostly affects people over 50 years old.

Aging causes the cartilage to lose strength and degenerate to a point where the discs become flat, thin, expand and even slip out of place (herniated disc).

AYURVEDA’S APPROACH TO RELIEVING CHRONIC NECK PAIN
These issues are called cervical osteoarthritis (degeneration) or cervical spondylitis (inflammation). Ayurveda has a similar condition called Greeva Graham, which is described as neck stiffness, inflammation and pain. Greeva (neck) and Graha (stiffness) is caused by increased vata dosa, which leads to the depletion of body tissues. The dryness caused by vata also leads to depletion of kapha dosa.

The first approach to resolving neck pain requires identifying what is causing excess vata.

FOODS AND LIFESTYLE HABITS THAT INCREASE VATA DOSA
Eating too fast or while on-the-go
Foods that are dry, cold, raw, light, old, spicy or processed
Fasting or waiting too long to eat
Skipping meals
Non-nutritious foods, soda, sweets, junk food
Dehydration
Sleeping during the day and staying awake at night
Suppressing natural urges (gas, urine, stool, burping)
Too much exercise or lifting weights that are too heavy
Walking or biking for long distances
Stress and prolonged emotions of grief, anger or fear
BALANCE VATA DOSA WITH YOUR DIET
If you’re experiencing chronic neck pain, make sure to eat nourishing foods that are good for digestion. Vata-balancing and nourishing foods include wheat, milk, ghee and butter. Sipping warm water also helps digestion.

Favor foods that are sweet, salty, and sour to pacify vata dosa. Warm soups, stews and kitchari are a good place to start. Avoid cold or iced drinks, raw food and dry food like chips, popcorn, and crackers. These types of food have the same qualities as vata and will further increase the aggravated vata dosa.

Sheer-o-BLISS!!

The past few years I’ve been working on an interesting shift with the relationship I have with my own form. I used to wake up in pain and hate my body for all it was not capable of doing. I had to grieve what the western world would call an “advanced” yoga practice which was crippling my mobility. I had to let go of some major ego and choose my body over praise for my hyper mobility. I had to choose to listen to my bodies response over food my mouth thoroughly enjoyed.

I’ve let go of so much to feel...ok. But the journey has been worth the effort. I’ve learned to love the aches and pains because now I know they aren’t from self hate, but a conversation about self love.

I hope you find this journey for yourself as well! And I’d love to assist you in the process! I have a few openings next week! ❤️

Drink up!!
According to Medical News Today, this much-talked-about wonder herb, in the form of golden milk, has many scientifically-backed health benefits—it’s loaded with antioxidants, and may reduce inflammation and joint pain, improve memory and brain function, protect against heart disease, lower blood sugar levels, help digestion, improve bone health, and possibly reduce the risk of cancer. Lately, turmeric has come to the forefront of therapeutics for the role it plays in benefitting both general mental health and mood—especially anxiety.

GOLDEN MILK RECIPE
INGREDIENTS

1 cup unsweetened coconut milk (or almond, rice, soy, or oat milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger or chopped fresh ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
½– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom, or 2-3 cardamom pods, crushed (optional)
1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
1 tablespoon ghee - optional* vegan ghee is my choice!

INSTRUCTIONS
In a small saucepan warm the milk until hot. Do not boil.

Whisk in, ground turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, ghee, and black pepper.

Whisk as the ingredients warm in the milk. Heat up for about 5-10 minutes until hot, but not boiling.

Whisk frequently.

Turn off the heat and taste to adjust the taste to your liking. Add honey or raw cane sugar to taste or more turmeric or ginger for a more intense flavor. Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon.

Small-town Florence hosts a top-tier Indian & Nepalese spot 25/01/2021

For the folks in Colorado or those who are traveling through, it looks like we have an option for some Ayurvedic cooking! Can't wait to try it out!

"Vhandari imports and blends his own spices, and the small-ish menu features a page that explains Ayurvedic cooking principles, noting health aspects of a dozen primary ingredients like fennel, cinnamon, clove and coriander. Chettri’s wife is a nurse and devoted vegan (hence many vegan menu options, including dairy-free naan), and he says she’s concerned about so many young people getting sick from the junk foods they’re eating: “We really do care and we understand what foods do to human beings, we get it,” he says, noting they also “cook with love.”

Small-town Florence hosts a top-tier Indian & Nepalese spot It’s rare to find food this spectacular in a town of around 4,000 people. But here we are at 3-year-old Turmeric Indian & Nepalese Restaurant in Florence, just outside Cañon

Keep Kapha Moving in Winter!

Vegetables
Vegetables that pacify kapha will generally be pungent, bitter, and astringent. Most vegetables include some combination of these tastes, so vegetables are an important centerpiece of any effective kapha-balancing diet.

Cooked vegetables are generally easier to digest than raw ones, so it’s best to have raw veggies, salads, and kapha-aggravating vegetables in small quantities and at mid-day when digestive strength is at its peak. Raw vegetables are often more appropriate for kapha in the spring and summer seasons.
