We’ve had a lot of reports of smoke coming from the McBride Fire. It is very common to see smoke from a wildfire for many weeks after the fire. There is no need to call 911. The smoke is caused by smoldering stumps and logs inside of the firelines but are not threatening containment lines. Firefighters continue to patrol the fire area. Please help us share this message so we can keep the 911 lines open for other fires and emergencies.

McBride Fire – Friday, April 22, 2022, Daily Update. Today is an Extreme Critical Fire Weather Day.
Acres: 6,159
Cause: Under investigation
Containment: 89%
Location: Gavilan Canyon within the Village of Ruidoso that spread to state and Lincoln National Forest
Start Date: April 12, 2022
Fuels: Timber, brush, grasses
Structures burned: 207 primary structures, multiple outbuildings
Fatalities: 2 citizens
Highlights: This will be the FINAL written update for the McBride and Nogal Canyon Fires.
Both the Nogal Canyon and McBride Fires were transferred to a Type 4 Command structure on April 21st at 7:00 am.
Safety: Today is an Extremely Critical Fire Weather Day. There are red flag warnings in effect. Lincoln County, the Village of Ruidoso, Otero County and the Lincoln National Forest are ALL under fire restrictions or burn bans. Please do not burn debris, weld or have campfires on red flag warning days.
Operations: Minimal fire activity was observed across the fire as crews continued to patrol and monitor the fire. An excavator was used alongside ground crews to support suppression repair work in the Eagle Creek area. Small pockets of smoldering debris will continue to produce smoke over the coming days and weeks. This is very common after a fire. As the fire continues to release resources, a group remains available for initial attack for any new fire starts.
After the Fire: Citizens whose property sustained damage and need paperwork for insurance claims can contact the Ruidoso Community Development Office at 575-258-6999.
Flooding and other adverse effects are common after a fire. A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has begun assessments for the McBride and Nogal Canyon Fires. BAER teams evaluate post-fire conditions and determine the potential for increased flooding, mudslides, and rockslides. The team consist of hydrologists, geologists, soil scientists, road engineers, botanists, biologists, and archeologists from both federal and state agencies. Efforts are focused on the protection of human life and safety, property, and critical cultural and natural resource values. The BAER assessment will take approximately two weeks to complete their burned area assessment.
Weather: Temperatures in the mid-70s and strong southwest winds are expected at 40 mph with gusts 60-70 mph.
Lincoln County and Lincoln National Forest under Fire Restrictions.
"Extreme Critical Fire Weather Watch. I don't know what other words I can use to describe what today looks likes for fire weather." -Scott Stearns, Fire Weather Meteorologist referring to the weather on April 22, 2022.
As of 7 am the McBride Fire has been transferred to a Type-4 Incident Management Team. With high containment numbers and no fire movement for multiple days, we will be switching to a full written update every other day. Expect another full update on Friday. We will continue to post pictures, general fire info and information on the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) on this page moving forward.
Residents can continue to call 575-258-6900 for information.
To the residents of Lincoln County:
As we prepare to leave our assignment on the Nogal and McBride Fires, the members of the Southwest Area National Incident Management Team 2, would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many individuals who gave their cooperation and assistance during this wildfire incident. although people were suffering through devastating loss, you welcomed us into your community, and expressed immense gratitude, and supported the hard work by firefighters and fire personnel
Everyone, regardless of their involvement, was impacted by disturbances to their daily lives that are inevitably associated with wildfires. We appreciated your patience and understanding as we went about the business of managing an active incident. Fire personnel returning home will take with them an appreciation of the beauty of the area and welcoming spirit of the people who live here.
The progress and success we’ve been able to achieve was due in large part to the initial response by local responders. The strong, existing relationships amongst local, county, state and federal agencies made our job easier in coordinating and managing the many layers of this large, complex fire.
On behalf of all the Southwest Incident Management team members, please accept our sincere gratitude, Thank you!
Dave Bales,
Incident Commander
Southwest Area Incident Management Team 2
Laura Rabon, Public Affairs Officer with the Lincoln National Forest, gives us a look at the McBride Fire and suppression repair work.

McBride Fire 89% Contained.
Firefighters on the McBride Fire are digging deep to get rid of the heat. Check out this series of photos showing the Lost River Type 2 Initial Attack Hand Crew in action, on the Northeast Flank of the fire.
Crews like this are using hand tools to slash into the ground to expose burning materials. They also use backpack pumps as water sources to help cool isolated hot spots. Working as a team, crews like this are able to respond quickly and effectively where needed, as the effort continues to fully contain this fire.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. Yesterday evening four UTVs owned by a US Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew assigned to the McBride Fire 2022 were vandalized. The vandalism occurred at the end of Eagle Creek Road where the pavement ends and it turns to dirt. Hotshots and other firefighting personnel use UTVs to access parts of the fire where regular vehicles cannot go. Thankfully, this unfortunate incident has not hampered fire suppression efforts. No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Office at 575-648-2341.

Incendio McBride – Martes 19 de April 2022 Actualizacion Diaria
Acres: 6,159 Contención: 84%
Causa: Bajo investigación Personal: 438
Fecha de inicio: 12 de abril de 2022 Fatalidades: 2 Ciudadanos
Combustibles: Madera, Arbustos y Pastos
Localizacion: Cañón del Gavilán dentro del Pueblo de Ruidoso
Estructuras Quemadas: 207 estructuras primarias y múltiples dependencias
Si tu vuelas, nosotros no podemos!

Location: Gavilan Canyon within the Village of Ruidoso
Fuels: Timber, brush, grasses
Structures burned: 207 primary structures, multiple
outbuildings
Personnel: 438
Fatalities: 2 citizens
Highlights: Multiple pieces of firefighter equipment located in and around the fire area has been vandalized. Law enforcement is involved and an investigation is underway.
With objectives continuing to be met, the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 2 (SWAIMT2) will begin to transition the fire to a Type 4 Command structure on Thursday morning at 7:00 am. The SWAIMT2 will provide a final written update on Wednesday April 20th. Schools are back in session today. Expect increased traffic and congestion along Gavilan Canyon Road in addition to firefighter and utility company vehicles working in the area.
Operations: Yesterday, there was no need for aircraft to assist with bucket drops but a fixed wing aircraft was utilized for a reconnaissance flight. This flight found minimal heat across the fire area, including Moon Mountain. Debris piles on the northern end of the fire, created during suppression efforts, are producing smoke visible to nearby residents. This fire activity does not pose a threat to the fire line at this time and crews will remain onsite to monitor. With the decrease in fire activity, no fire growth over several days, and objectives being met, resources are being released to help with other fires located in New Mexico and Arizona.
Crews have begun to implement the suppression repair plan for the fire area. Fire suppression repair is a series of immediate post-fire actions taken to repair damages and minimize potential soil erosion and impacts resulting from fire suppression activities. This work usually begins before the fire is contained and before the demobilization of an Incident Management Team. This work repairs the hand and dozer fire lines, roads, trails, staging areas, safety zones and drop points used during fire suppression effort.
Evacuations: All evacuations were lifted at 10:00 am on Sunday, April 17th.
Safety: While the majority of the communities have been repopulated for a few days, we ask that people remain vigilant when driving in and around the fire area. There remains a heavy presence of firefighters and utility company workers in the area. Reduce your speed, plan extra time to travel to and from your home, and turn on your headlights to increase your visibility to other drivers. We want everyone to safely arrive to their destination and limit the impact on crews completing work. Avoid the fire area if you do not live within the communities to reduce disruptions for fire operations.
Weather: Dry, southwest winds are expected between 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Wednesday.
A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place: Wildfires are a NO Drone Zone. Flying recreational and media drones within a TFR is illegal and impedes fire suppression efforts. Report drones to local law enforcement. If You Fly, We Can’t!

Incendio McBride – Lunes 18 de April 2022 Actualizacion Diaria
Acres: 6,159
Contención: 80%
Causa: Bajo investigación
Personal: 432
Fecha de inicio: 12 de abril de 2022
Fatalidades: 2 Ciudadanos
Combustibles: Madera, Arbustos y Pastos
Localizacion: Cañón del Gavilán dentro del Pueblo de Ruidoso
Estructuras Quemadas: 207 estructuras primarias y múltiples dependencias
¡Si tú vuelas, nosotros no podemos!

Monday, April 18 Operational Update for McBride and Nogal Fires with Rocky Gilbert, Field Operations Chief
McBride Fire – Monday, April 18, 2022 Daily Update
Acres: 6,159
Cause: Under investigation
Containment: 80%
Start Date: April 12, 2022
Location: Gavilan Canyon within the Village of Ruidoso
Fuels: Timber, brush, grasses
Structures burned: 207 primary structures, multiple
outbuildings
Personnel: 432 Fatalities: 2 citizens
Highlights: With all evacuations lifted, Gavilan Canyon Road has re-opened. This will support all school bus routes once school resumes on Tuesday, April 19th.
Operations: The majority of work left to be completed is along the eastern fire’s edge. However, firefighters will have a presence in the communities to the west to address hotspots and mitigate hazard trees. Yesterday, crews were able to complete a full assessment with hotshot crews walking the entire perimeter. A reconnaissance flight was conducted to check the fire’s edge for hotspots. Observed fire activity was minimal with a few smoke columns being produced within the interior of the fire as winds increased throughout the day. Today, firefighters are working to increase the depth of mop up operations from the fire’s edge, working towards the interior to extinguish any remaining pockets of heat. Line construction is ongoing along the eastern, un-contained fire perimeter to tie multiple pieces of line together. This successful operation supported the containment increase to 80% yesterday evening.
With the increased containment and objectives being met across the fire area, the Incident Management Team will begin to release resources. This process is known as right-sizing the organization and makes resources available to assist with fires across the southwest. A group of firefighters remain available to assist with initial attack should a new fire start in the surrounding area. Helicopters are available to assist ground crews with water bucket drops.
Evacuations: All evacuations have been lifted as of 10:00 am on Sunday, April 17th. Crews remained onsite overnight and within the repopulated communities.
Safety: If you are not a resident, please stay out of active fire areas to allow crews safe access to the fire and surrounding area regardless of the open status if you are not a resident. There is a heavy presence of both firefighters and the utility companies working along Gavilan Canyon Road and the repopulated communities. This work will continue throughout the week. If you need to travel through the area, please reduce your speed and turn on your headlights to ensure both your safety and that of our crews working.
Weather: Temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s with winds out of the south, southeast. Expect winds 15-20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. There is a low probability of thunderstorms developing near the fire area.
Restrictions/Closures: Gavilan Canyon Road has reopened. Please respect any restrictions and closures in place. Violations impede firefighter response and delay suppression activities.
A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place: Wildfires are a NO Drone Zone. Flying recreational and media drones within a TFR is illegal and impedes fire suppression efforts. Report drones to local law enforcement. If You Fly, We Can’t!
