The Long Gone Loser Movie Show

Aside from music, I am obsessed with movies and here's where I'll talk and post about them.

Without fail, every single time I watch this movie, I always forget who the killer is and how it ends. Classic Dario Argento movie from Arrow Video looks incredible in 4K UHD. So good!

So I watched this and here’s what I thought, not that my opinion matters…

I truly believe that Rob Zombie’s heart is in the right place whenever he makes a movie. The dude has a successful music career so making movies the way he does is probably more of a passion than a paycheck. I could be wrong but that’s how it looks to me, and I did interview him once about movies and he was cool and collected and definitely has impeccable taste in all things cool. His Cramps backpatch on his denim jacket that day was a nice touch. The Cramps rule!

ANYWAY, to recreate The Munsters is no easy feat for anyone who grew up with the original show. You see, the original show was iconic and I believe it was the stronger of the two shows from that era that followed the strange path of horror comedy of the time. And that’s no shade on the Addams Family cos I love that show too. But to me, The Munsters just seemed more goofy and in line with my sense of humour. And cos I loved those cars! The Koach and Dragula were just so awesome.

But anyway, the Munsters movie…

I was unsure if I would like it because Rob’s movies are definitely in a league of their own. I don’t like everything he’s done, but the ones I enjoyed, I REALLY enjoyed and I like the fact he doesn’t do a straight remake. He takes a movie and gives it his own ideas and imagination while holding on to elements of what made the original special and that’s why I liked his Halloween.

With the Munsters though, I gotta be honest, it started off so goofy and confusing that I was kinda uninterested but there was still something that held me and I couldn’t turn away. I hadn’t done any research on this movie before I went in and that’s probably why I had no idea it was an origins movie so that’s on me.

But then it picked up… it got better… and I saw it through to the end. Once Herman and Lily meet, the movie picks up and starts moving. I really liked the nods to modern day culture and to the original series. They were nice touches.

As a take on The Munsters, well, let’s face it, we who grew up on the show will most likely think the show is better and I know for me, that’s the case. But to someone who has never seen the show but watches this film as it is, with no connection to the original, they’ll most likely be entertained by it.

I saw someone online complain that there was no Eddie or Spot. Well, firstly, this is an origins movie and follows the story of how Herman and Lily meet - so Eddie ain’t even a thought yet. And as for Spot, the person obviously didn’t watch it that closely because Spot IS in the film and it even shows them naming him.

Miss Elvira herself, Cassandra Petersen, makes an appearance towards the end as a real estate agent and that was a nice touch.

The set design is fantastic… I gotta hand it to them, they smashed it out of the park and did a top job on that. The colours are nice and and it suits the style of the film just perfectly.

All up, I personally will always prefer the original but like I said before, I grew up watching the show and therefore have a nostalgic connection to it, but a newbie to the Munsters world might see this and enjoy it a lot... and then, fingers crossed, hopefully see the original and where the idea came from and love it.

I thought Rob’s adaption of The Munsters was fine for what it was. I did laugh and like I said, there was something about it that kept me watching even though I wasn’t sure of it to begin with.

Everyone has an opinion on this film but honestly, watch it yourself and make your own mind up. If you are intrigued, give it a whirl. If you don’t care, don’t watch it. My curiosity got the better of me so I had to see it and I’m glad I did. Not sure how many rewatches it will get from me but I’m sure if they make a follow up, I’ll be watching that too.

Was there a better voice of horror than Vincent Price? Probably not. His creepy voice was so perfect and his line delivery was spot on every time.

Vincent Price.

Best film magazine ever!

PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO was one of the best film magazines going. Not always easy to find here in Australia but when we did, it was like gold! This was like the Bible to trash and cult cinema. Great stuff. Can’t believe I found these again. I thought they were lost.

Anyone else read Psychotronic Magazine?

Saddened to hear about the passing of Russ Meyer film legend, Kitten Natividad. Her movies were always fun and hilarious. She will be missed. RIP Francesca.

Saw this recently and I really enjoyed it. I felt the two girls, Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey, were great as Hunter and Becky, and for those who have a fear of heights, this is one film that'll make you squirm. It's a solid thriller and I was hooked pretty quickly as I kept hanging on waiting to see how it would end. Good stuff and it's definitely worthy of a watch.
