Tackling the Sunny Ways of a certain well quaffed PM, the non-existent clothes of an orange-tinted-e

18/06/2023

I got the No Baby Blues.

This is the 3rd Father's Day since I was genuinely hoping (and trying) to be one. Infertility is a really tough thing. It's an emotional rollercoaster and not a fun one.

Luckily I have the most amazing wife and some good friends. Still, one of the hardest aspects I've encountered through this journey is the stigma. Apparently, 1 in 6 couples struggle with this, but I've observed almost no one talks about it. I have found it SUPER hard to discuss and process my feelings, so here's me singing about it instead.

(Sorry/your welcome? for the candour.)
Happy Father's Day to those who celebrate, and for you folks hoping or mourning- I feel for ya. This one's for you. ❤️‍🩹

I can’t tell you what a pleasure it is to make music with such wonderful people - who are also so fantastically talented. Tomorrow (Thursday) this stellar group of folks will be playing as ‘Space Case’ which is the songs of Sol James, Rusty Robot and myself. We are so lucky to be joined by the incredible , and Meg Dolovich. Want more reasons to come?

1) The Beer Can has generously decided to make the show free! Which is an exceptionally good price if you ask me.

2) Bad ass bassist Meg I realized we will be celebrating our 20th year of playing together… Which is a pretty amazing thing considering we started as 2 fresh faced youngsters in the Long and McQuade all-star high school jazz band all those years ago 🤓

3) Ill be playing the drums! Which is something I don’t always do but I sure love it. Come see what fascinating faces I make while trying to sing at the same time!

I spent an hour and a half at a walk-in this morning, received excellent treatment and am home with medication and no bill. It would be so easy to say what a great country! And it is. For many of us. But last week I spent the same amount of time trying to help a woman on the street who had been sent away from the hospital with what was clearly a massive life-threatening tooth infection, and no medication at all. I am positive the difference in our care was systemic racism.

I will be playing a show today because music is my living, and I cannot afford not too. I am very conflicted about it and I dont think turning down a gig would help anyone. So I will do what I can as I do my job. I am wearing this shirt I bought from INAC - Indigenous Nations Apparel Co. and the proceeds go to the Orange Shirt Society . Today, I will begin our set with an acknowledgment, not just of the land, but of the gross injustices and violence that were and are involved in stealing it. I will not shy away from any conversations that result.

And then yes, I will play my very best.

I understand families and folks who have missed out on so much over the last few years with a day off who want to enjoy a holiday. I understand folks who need to work today.

What I cannot reconcile is feeling like this is a country who deserves a party right now. How can you know that thousands of children died in schools created by the government of Canada, and then wave the flag unabashedly? That the same medical system that takes such excellent care of me has forcibly sterilized woman and removed children from mothers. Many people only became aware of this in the last year! It baffles me.

I believe if we all collectively spent the next 364 days working towards the recommendations of the TRC: learning, listening, voting, and acting, then next year we would have something to celebrate.

I am committed to do what I can through my art and my privilege and that includes today.

But I am extremely unsettled and as a settler on these lands, maybe that is the right way to be feeling today.

16/06/2022

Looking forward to banging some beats from the lead drums tomorrow with the ! 10 buds, over 50 Motown tunes. Saturday we take the show on the road to the magical grange before bringing it home to on Sunday at the Cube. Gonna be lit!

"I am once again asking you to come to a show tonight..."

- jonny moonbeam, novice motivational speaker, neon-tie wearer, and questionable mic-grip technique pioneer.
In all seriousness though, I am quite excited about playing tonight with my good friends Sol James, Rusty Robot, MJ Dandeneau, Joanna Miller, and Keiran on keys! We're all debuting some brand new songs and some golden oldies. I hear a certain IMAGINARY band might even make an appearance...
If you are in 'Peg city tonight, I channel the motivational speaker energy of this pic to encourage YOU to be your best self and come enjoy some music, food and drinks, and community in the beautiful outdoors at Blue Note Park tonight. Doors 730, music starting shortly after that cuz we're old now.
PIC: the wonderful Matt Duboff

I don't always play electric guitar but when I do, it's usually on top of a hill at sunset, or even better, at Blue Note Park this Thursday as collaborative full-band project Space Case (w/ pals Rusty Robot and Sol James). Music and community outdoors in the city. It's summer folks. Come rock the sundown and the moon up with us please.

Can't tell you how much I am looking forward to playing a show with these two on June 9. Full band, new songs, and two surprise covers... it's gonna be a night.
Sol James is one of my longest collaborators and favorite singers and her songs all sound like timeless classics. Rusty Robot is just a rock and roll machine and has written some of my fav songs ever, playing a couple tunes from his time with IMAGINARY CITIES will be a dream come true next week. We'll all play on each other's songs and have just the best band on stage to keep it full- seriously, it doesn't get any better than MJ Dandeneau, Joanna Miller and Keiran Placatka Ill tell ya what...
Speaking of the best, you couldn't ask for a more excellent venue than the Blue Note Park, put on by the folks at the legendary Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club. Outdoors AND well stocked in libations, what's not to love?
It would mean a lot to see you there. Thanks friends.

Been having a blast working on some tracks with (aka Gully of the fabulous ) and lately! These gents are intelligent, kind and talented socially conscious lyricists with a powerful message and killer delivery. We also have a lot of fun. Catch them spitting some fire with a live band on Saturday! 🔥

Show-cial Artists 10-15!
Madeleine Roger: hands down one of the heartbreakinglyest master songsmiths on the scene. Joni Blue Album level vocals/lyrics. All around gem.
Diaphanie stole the show in November at the Winnipeg Folk Festival show I hosted. She’s got something REALLY special up her sleeve for Saturday.
Tyler Del Pino and I go WAY back and he has his own show the night before at the Goodwill Social Club. Check out this heartthrob!
Sol James is the sun to my moon, the kick to my butt, and probably the best performer I know. Come see.
Red Moon Road: never heard of them but that one guy looks familiar. 😉
ALL playing at the West End Cultural Centreon Saturday! Tickets 2/3 gone so…

Show-cial bands 5-10!
Rayannah: I started playing shows with Ray so long ago she wasn’t old enough to get into the bars! Now I’m not cool to get enough into the shows that she plays. Check out her enchanting music and see her on Saturday!
FONTINE is taking over the world. Musically. Right now. Better come see her while you can. PIPES!!
I recently heard Mackenzie Jane singing and I thought to myself “her voice is a kungfu butterfly”. Come hear what I mean. She got skillz.
Sheena Rattai: I’ve made more music with Sheena than just about anyone and she still amazes me! She gonna folk, rock and soul out on Sat!
Rusty Robot: might be from the future, and so has an unfair advantage, but he is a song writing and guitar playing machine like no other. As I always say of him “0110101011000110”! Jk Jk.
Collect all 5 this Saturday at the West End Cultural Centre at Joanna and Daniel's Wedding Show-cial.

Buncha bangin bands at the Show-cial this Saturday!
Deep dive first 5:
Retro Rhythm Review: so many great musicians playing my fav Motown tunes. Got our start as the backup band for a certain uncle… maybe a come back surprise guest? 😎🤷🏽‍♂️
Sweet Alibi: I adore these gals. Such consummate songwriting and harmonies and about the most fun I ever had on tour.
JP Hoe if you know Hoe…you know. I’ve been a fan of this guy since his first EP. Such a killer songwriter and the pipes… The pipes!
Tyler Sneesby: this guy is a veritable encyclopedia of funky dance tunes. He also happens to be just about the nicest guy who’s done just a ton for the Winnipeg music scene. So thrilled he’ll keep us dancing between the two band sets.
Pie: The Music of Cake: Some of my best friends playing some of my favorite music by one of my favorite bands.
Catch them all at West End Cultural Centre this Saturday!

The Fake Divide — JONNY MOONBEAM

Occasionally I type opinions on my tiny digital soapbox!
Here's an overdue one written on tour last month. On "Wexit" and the "Fake Divide".
Thoughtful comments welcome!
https://jonnymoonbeam.com/blog/2019/11/26/the-fake-divide

jonnymoonbeam.com On the fake divide: I was in Alberta on the night of the federal election.  You only need to look at the sea of blue that flooded these western provinces to know how that was. As we speed (er, drive responsibly) across snowy Saskatchewan, I want to share a thought.

jonny moonbeam LIVE at the Winnipeg Crankie Festival

Playing the 2nd Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival In Honour of Mitch Podolak this weekend was one of the highlights of my career. Got to play a workshop with some of my long time heros (James Keelaghan, Keri Latimer and Nicky Mehta) before closing out the festival with some of my other heros / friends The Duhks,The New Customs, Red Moon Road and Nathan Rogers. Mitch Podolak would have loved it.
Now I am focused, excited and a little nervous for moonbeam & Sweet Alibi - Live at the Times Change(d) this week!
Touring with Sweet Alibi last month was a blast. They are so much fun and simply amazing singers. We're going to wrap it all up on Thursday. I'll play the first set and then hop on drums for one last (literal) shebang with the ladies. Would love to see ya Winnipeg...

Red Moon Road

sometimes moonbeam is 1/3 of Red Moon Road.
sometimes RMR rocks out in a glamour jungle.
sometimes it ends up online.
this is one of those times.

About 6 months ago we sat down with Synonym Art Consultation and BNB Studios to conceptualize this live video shoot/event. When Sheena Rattai said "let's make it a 'glamour jungle'" we could not have known how thoroughly that vision would be realized. It was a literal dream come true.

We are SO excited to release this video to the world. It was a pleasure and an honour to work with such an amazing team of professionals and friends. We would like to express our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this session the beautiful and effortless evening that it was, including all those who came out to be a part of our studio audience. We love you and we had SO MUCH FUN!!

To all of you watcing and listening now, we love you too! None of this would be possible without you. We hope you enjoy!

**** NEW VIDEO AND SOAPBOX ****

It has been a snowy Winnipeg in Winnipeg today - no sun in sight.

I debated whether or not it was the right time to release this video after seeing how close the federal location has become.

This song was my creative reaction to the hypocrisy I believe was displayed by Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada | Parti libéral du Canada- who, on the same day, both declared a climate emergency AND bought a pipeline. They also reneged on their promise of electoral reform, which would have allowed me to vote with my conscience rather than my fear. I would love to break Canada's 150 year cycle of swinging between 2 parties expecting different results and see what a government lead by Elizabeth May or Jagmeet Singh would look like.

Regardless - I believe, FAR WORSE than the status quo would be a government led by Andrew Scheer.

But we don’t vote for leaders here in Canada.

So, here in Winnipeg Center South, I think we have two great choices in Elizabeth Shearer for Winnipeg South Centre and James Beddome - both of whom realize the importance of tackling climate change and seem invested in this community.

But I would also still take the Liberal candidate in order to defeat conservative candidate Joyce Bateman for Winnipeg South Centre, who’s major public discourse seems more concerned about who unilaterally supports a foreign government over issues here in her own riding and Canada.
I cannot vote for a candidate who supports a party like the The Conservative Party of Canada, which currently does not take the issue of climate change seriously AND who rails against immigration - all while talking about overriding the environmental leadership and rights of Indigenous people who are the ORIGINAL inhabitants of Canada.

So what to do? That is a question for each of us.

But we must hold whoever our leader and representatives are accountable come October 22, or there will be more "un-sunny days".

jonnymoonbeam.com " Sunny ways my friends, sunny ways " Trudeau said in his 2015 victory speech, quoting Laurier (who originally was referring to a fable by Aesop ).  I will confess when I heard Justin Trudeau make that reference, my eyeballs did a little trip to the back of my head.
