The opening was absolutely stunning! ✨
The whole district's pieces were beautiful and we were proud to have ours displayed! All of the students did a magnificent job putting their own touch into our collaborative pieces. We are so proud of our Hemenway artists!

Here are pictures to share, but we will say if you have the chance to see them in person definitely do! The district's installation will be up until June 5th!

We are excited to announce that on May 12 we are opening a visual art exhibition at the Mill Contemporary Art Studios! ✨

From 6:00-8:00pm, you can see our collaborative work, have a snack, meet artists who work at the Mill Contemporary Art Studios, and even visit their studios! All of the Hemenway art is collaborative work to which many students contributed. We are so proud of all the students' growth this year, their hard work, creativity, and cooperation!

Students were inspired by artists such as Favianna Rodriguez Dale Chihuly, Rosa Tolnov Clausen, Mary Shackman, and their own community!

✨Pictures of work to share with family to come soon!✨

These photos were taken in the winter- a nice time to cozy up, learn about Andy Warhol, and practice our printmaking skills. One of my favorite things about printmaking is the fact that the students help teach each other how to do it. I teach a few artists, then they teach a few, then THEY teach a few, and so on and so on. It's an effective way to work with small groups and is always a nice boost to their self-esteem when the students become teachers.

4th and 5th graders had a blast learning a little bit about gems and geodes and using various watercolor techniques (wet on wet, salt, and crayon resist). We also added some beautiful crystally glitter (a rare treat in the artroom)!

Everyone was excited as the 5th Grade Beauty & the Beast play approached earlier this month. Several grades participated in projects inspired by the story and the aesthetics of the setting. 4th and 5th grade studied a bit about architecture (particularly Gothis architecture and castle design), gargoyles, and stained glass. We enjoyed the process and we LOVED the performance!!! Kudos to all the actors, the kids working behind the scenes, and the wonderful parent volunteers. What a spectacular production!

Last month, 2nd and 3rd graders worked on their observation skills with some colorful harvest vegetables and fruit. We loved their focus on variations of color and little details.

K & 1st did some experimenting with color mixing, and boy did they have fun!!! They used various materials including Model Magic, modeling clay, and paint throughout the process. If you ask them which are the 3 primary colors, they should be able to identify them and tell you which primary color pairs make the various secondary colors. πŸ™‚ There will be more color mixing fun ahead as we learn about color value. Stay tuned!!

You can't leave out the LEAVES when they're as beautiful as these! Wow- Mother Nature has been a wonderful inspiration to our K-5 artists as they learned about realistic colors vs. the bright and 'wild' colors of Fauvism (and Matisse who started that Art Movement/style). Then we looked at some of the contemporary work of artist Muxxi, whose art stimulated a fun discussion (and 'quiz') on symmetry. From there we created symmetrical leaves and added color. Did your child choose to color theirs realistically or did they go 'Fauve'? 🀩

Big dots, Little Dots, Dots Upon Dots, Spinning Dots, Dots on Rocks..... all grades celebrated 'Dot Day' last week in honor of the book 'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds. It's a wonderful book that reminds us to believe in ourselves, use a positive growth mindset, and do just as Hemenway Tigers do: PERSERVERE!

Here comes the SUN-flower!!!
Grades 2-5 did some still-life drawing practice and experimented with oil pastels. I wish I could have taken a photo of each and every one. They did such a beautiful job and they are all so unique. Different artists=different styles. πŸ™‚πŸ’—πŸŒ»
Happy Spring everyone!
