🚨Every year, approximately one million people die from vector-borne diseases, and climate change impacts are likely to worsen the situation🦟🌍

is already having adverse effects on the transmission and spread of vector-borne diseases, and the severity of these impacts is expected to escalate. The CLIMOS Project is playing an important role in mitigating and preventing the transmission and spread of vector-borne diseases.

CLIMOS project aims to develop a climate monitoring and decision support framework for sand fly-borne diseases detection and mitigation, and to do so, has already collected – only this year – sand fly samples in 199 points, on 11 European and neighbouring countries (Slovenia, Turkey, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Israel, Czech Republic, Croatia and Austria). CLIMOS also developed meaningful scenarios with the support of outstanding stakeholders to develop an Early Warning System which will support from Public Health authorities, veterinarians, to citizens in preventing human and animal infections.

Between October 2nd and 4th, the CLIMOS project, an acronym for Climate Monitoring and Decision Support Framework for Sand Fly-borne Diseases Detection and Mitigation with Cost-benefit and Climate-policy Measures held a General Assembly Meeting at the Universidad de Murcia. During the General Meeting, partners convened to discuss the advancements and strategies crucial to the success of CLIMOS. The meeting focused on devising measures to monitor climate-related factors and develop effective strategies to mitigate the potential impacts of SFBDs.

CLIMOS Project is releasing a set of opinion articles 📰 under the project thematics. This month article, from Nils Hempelmann, Project manager on the field of and at Open Geospatial Consortium, explains how he is supporting the move toward (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) systems for use in the emergency alert systems and data pipelines.

According to him, “Changes in temperature and precipitation, combined with changes in land use and cover, are creating spatial shifts in the life-cycle dynamics of disease-transmitting vectors, such as bats, small mammals, or mosquitoes, which has resulted in changing risks of exposure to disease”.

Great News from Paris, France 🇫🇷

Our coordinator, Carla Maia, is attending to the European Veterinary Parasitology Collegue presenting the CLIMOS poster "Providing a better knowledge and comprehension of climate and environmental drivers of sand fly-borne diseases - the CLIMOS project"

This Poster aimed to present the main objectives of the CLIMOS project, namely:

1️⃣ To develop CLIMOS framework for prediction, fast screening, economic assessment, decision support, and sand fly surveillance, based on stakeholder needs and requirements.

2️⃣ To conduct data collection from cross-laboratory field studies in 10 countries, perform qualitative data collection, data analysis, and risk assessment, as an input to policy-making and communication activities.

3️⃣ To develop decision support models for assessment of sand fly-borne diseases (SFBDs)-related health and socio-economic vulnerabilities and improve understanding of the cumulative effects of the multiple stressors of climate variability, and environmental change on SFBDs development and spread.

4️⃣ To validate developed models, tools, and surveillance system in 10 countries, using the proposed general public risk assessment method for policy-relevant use cases.

5️⃣ To implement a comprehensive scientific and public dissemination policy and outreach programme to communicate project results to a broad audience.

The 2023 meeting marks the 20th anniversary of the event and is dedicated to the “Last 20 years in Veterinary Parasitology: trends and future”, and covers veterinary parasitology bringing it closer to the daily life of practitioners.

Did you know💡?

There’s no denying that scientists 👩‍🔬 love a good, old-fashioned argument. But when it comes to climate change, more than 90 percent of scientists agree that the planet is warming and that humans are the primary cause.

Scientific agreement about climate change ⛈️ started to emerge in the late 1980s, when the influence of human-caused warming began to rise above natural climate variability. By 1991, scientists surveyed for an early consensus study said that they accepted the idea of anthropogenic global warming. And by 1995, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, concluded that “the balance of evidence suggests that there is a discernible human influence on global climate.”
