Let’s talk calm down tools!

Children are learning to express their emotions and sometimes it’s hard for them to regulate their emotions. They may also be experiencing sensory needs. These tools can help children express how they feel and use tools to help their bodies feel better.

Emotion charts are great for children who may not have words to express or not sure how to label their feelings. They can show you by just pointing to the picture.

Calm down tools can include things like getting a drink or water, taking big breathes (smell the flower blow out the candle), taking a walk using noise canceling headphones if it’s too loud and using a fidget toy like putty. These can all help children calm their bodies and bring them back to a regulated state.

Sensory needs are a big thing with our special needs community many of these tools may be helpful for them. Sensory needs effect the way a child processes and responds to sensory input in their environment.

Seating options!

Gives child a designated space. Easy to redirect back to their spot “stay on your blue dot”.

Can help with engagement and focus. Also it can be motivating if given a choice for example do you want the blue dot or the red dot to sit on.

Can help with a motor need or sensory need.
Cube chairs for example give support on the back and sides to help child sit up.
Wiggle cushions allow kids who are wiggly to move a bit while still keeping them seated in a designated space.

You can also give choices of how a child can sit for example cross cross, mountain (knees up) or mermaid (legs to the side).

There are so many ways seating options can be used to support a child’s needs!

Hi I wanted to take moment to introduce myself! My name is Chelsie Henden. I created Specially Woven out of my heart for serving Jesus and the special needs community. I wanted to create resources for churches to create special needs ministries that can help meet the needs of every child that walks through their doors no matter their needs, and make Sunday school and the word of God accessible. I want church to be the one place where families with special needs children feel seen, heard and l loved.
