Some photos from Steve Vai concert yesterday. He’s in a great shape and was fun and friendly. Still, such a fun performer to watch.

🚨New music alert !
I'm thrilled to share the release of a special collaboration with LAZOU (Sherry-Lynn Lee). We've joined forces to create a fresh and unique take on the Pink Floyd classic "Wish You Were Here." This rendition is a dreamy, chill blend that came out of spontaneous experimentation.

You can now listen to our new song on all major streaming services, here: https://song.link/i/1675138802

LAZOU is a trilingual Asian American producer, songwriter, and artist with music featured in hit TV shows like True Lies (CBS, 2023), Real Girlfriends In Paris (Bravo, 2022), and The Young & The Restless.

We met through a producer forum and bonded over our shared love for Pink Floyd records.

As always, thank you for your support, and I hope you enjoy this new collaboration as much as we enjoyed creating it.

What a great melody. The whole piece of music is around three minutes but I only ever remember this first part.

The Perfect Band by Jacob Gorban 25/10/2022

My new 80ies-rock-influenced single, "The Perfect Band", will be out on Spotify and other services on Nov 4th.

This song started from a simple idea "The band that never met."
The writing of the first version of the lyrics and the music took only two days at the beginning of February 2022, but the recording process and, especially, the mixing took a long, long time.

Personally, I'm very proud of this song, it's the kind of song that would be fun to perform live, and the sound of the mix reflects this a bit.

If you use Spotify, please spare a moment to pre-save it at https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jacobgorban/the-perfect-band-2 so that it's in your library when it gets released. Thank you.

I'm continuing writing a progressive metal kind of song. Re-recording the main verse rhythm part today. Yesterday I did the bass and some synths parts, too.

Paul Davids released a video where 10 different guitarists play over his backing track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqkCONb4-L4
As an exercise, I wanted to come up with something for this backing track as well, and this is it.

23/11/2021

Writing a new part for a new track. This part has a rather melancholic mood, with some progressive elements.

Reposting solo and improv over Beatles’ Something.
The previous video was cut to the 1-minute mark and didn’t contain the whole recording.
This recording is from 3 years ago.

This solo by Ian Thornley on Big Wreck's song Ghosts caught my attention the first time I heard it on the radio and hooked me into the band. All that special bending and the blues runs are amazing. I wanted to learn it and post a cover but couldn't find a good backing track. So I've recorded all the parts myself. Backing track, if interested, is linked in the comments.

The E string couldn’t stand the abuse anymore.

Fresh strings for fresh music.

A friend, Victor, suggested I play the solo of Empty Rooms by Gary Moore. I've never heard this song before, so I took a few listens and learned it last evening. Many nuances in Moore's playing and, of course, a lot of "feel" that's hard to imitate.

(Apple Music and Spotify don't have the long solo version, for some reason, the full song is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0clS4P4GlE).

Late-night practice on an acoustic guitar is great for coming up with harmonic and melodic ideas, like here.

Got myself a new Taylor acoustic last week. Trying it out for one of the new songs I’m working on.

This cover is based on the theme melody from the most famous animated series of Soviet-era TV, "Nu Pogodi" (Ну, Погоди!), or in English "Well, just you wait". Some tasty shredding follows.

If you watched the cartoons, leave a comment. If you haven't, leave a comment, too, and go watch it. It's like Tom and Jerry.

I recorded this cover of Genesis track "Horizons" three years ago. Steve Hackett wrote this piece and it appears in their Foxtrot album. It's one of my favorite pieces for an acoustic guitar but I wanted to play it on a clean electric.
Unrelated, the last concert I went to before COVID lockdowns was Steve Hackett's.

19/04/2021

Working on a new instrumental guitar track. Just improvising some ideas for the chorus section.

11/04/2021

Took the classical guitar into my hands yesterday, and this kind of melody developed. Maybe I can turn it into a section in some song down the road.
Not a perfect performance here but good enough to remember it for later.

In the last couple of days, we went “chasing” the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) as the prognosis was promising. I’ve seen stronger displays several years ago but it was still a pretty nice sight.

For a long while I wanted to try Jordan Rudess-designed GeoShred instrument (iOS app). Finally, this week I gave it a go. And why not do another take at the latest guitar solo that I played, Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall, pt. 2. I tinkered with the design of the sound until I liked it, where it had the sustain, the attack and the tone that I wanted.

I went a bit out of tune in a couple of places. It's a very sensitive and expressive instrument, so my control of it is still limited by the couple of days I was playing with it. I'm also not a keyboard player. I certainly wouldn't be able to play this well on a synth keyboard.

I'm looking forward to try and incorporate it in my own music, not to replace the guitars but for its other sounds.

Here's a short story on how one teacher can change the future of several kids.

In the 8th grade, our school had experimental music lessons. We listened to songs and then analyzed their lyrics and music, how they connect. It was not a lesson for musicians, so no musical theory or anything. We started with a couple of Beatles songs and then switched to The Wall album by Pink Floyd.

I never heard Pink Floyd before, or at least it never registered, so the whole sound was new to me, as well as the idea of a conceptual album or a rock opera. We would listen to one track each lesson in order and analyze it. We only had a short time to do that so, we probably only went five tracks into the album. In the last two lessons, we watched the movie The Wall. This experience greatly affected me and consolidated my love for Pink Floyd's music, which started with these lessons. I then listened to the rest of Pink Floyd's catalogue and other artists in the progressive and psychedelic rock genres. I also influenced my close friends with this music, and we all went through this musical journey together through high school and later.

A couple of years later, my dad bought me my first guitar. David Gilmour's guitar playing in Pink Floyd had an immense influence on my initial style and development as a musician. It was an influence when we wrote songs in the band with some of these friends, and to this day, when I release my music, people would often hear Pink Floyd's influence in it.

Today is David Gilmour's 75th birthday. His influence on the world of guitar is immense. He may not be considered a technical player, yet guitarists learn his techniques. Most importantly, his playing is very emotional – it's full of soul. Gilmour's sound is legendary, and generations of guitarists have been trying to get close to it. May you stay healthy and continue to inspire us.

And thanks to the young 8th-grade music teacher. She changed my life and the life of some of my close friends without knowing it.

28/02/2021

Another favourite from Pink Floyd. Lots of nuances in the sound and in the way David Gilmour plays this solo in the original recording of Another Brick in The Wall part 2. My sound and playing are not perfect but it's much better than my previous recorded attempts on the YouTube channel, 1 and 5 years ago.

I know David used a different guitar but my Les Paul doesn't have P-90 pickups so the Strat came closer. I've spent three evenings trying to get a sound that'll get close in feel. I'll post the links to these older recordings (both played on a Gibson Les Paul, in fact) in the comments to this post.

If there's an interest in a video about building this kind of sound, I can make one.

19/02/2021

My friend Maksym Kravchenko challenged me to recreate David Gilmour's sound in Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb with a clean amp and using a specific overdrive pedal as the main driver.
So this is a quick unedited recording with the result of this sound experiment. Mostly based on the original solo from the album and a couple of minutes of improv after that. Some mistakes here and there, as it happens.
In the meantime, I'm also working on more original material.

🎸 Who plays electric guitars here? I’m going to try a couple of different tubes in one of the amps.

Some evenings are just about jamming to guitar backing tracks. Improvisation is a separate skill from learning other people’s music or from writing songs. It’s a good way to just be yourself. It’s like meditation for me.

Erotomania by Dream Theater (John Petrucci guitar cover) 04/01/2021

New music video coming up. After 20 years, I can finally play the guitar parts in Dream Theater’s Erotomania, not perfectly but good enough to leave it behind me. It’s probably the most technical piece I’ve mastered yet. Premiering Monday 11:30EST. Click on the YouTube link and set up a reminder to be notified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FkCpuaP1cA

I wrote and recorded this riff-based part a couple of months ago and thought of making it an instrumental track. But at the same time I’ve been writing a new song and eventually decided to use this riff for the new song. So I’m happy to post this recording, as it’s something that won’t get released after that. Now, time l to start producing this new song. I’m calling it “Spares”.

Welcome to my musical project

Hey there 👋!

As a songwriter and a guitarist, I bring my unique sense of melody and the eclectic blend of my influences, from the atmospheric sounds of Pink Floyd and other giants of progressive rock, through jazz-rock fusion, to the modern progressive metal.

In the mid 90ies, I first tasted the joy of writing music with my friends in the band, and these days I collaborate with my former bandmate, Michael Starr, and other musicians, here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and around the globe.

The latest release is “Oh Dear World”, a poignant and introspective song, ranging from an almost acoustic sound to progressive metal and featuring Joby, a singer/songwriter from Norway.
