Hello, Followers of Bread Craft!
I will not be at the Whitley County Farmers Market this weekend, as planned. I love this market and participating for the past 3 years has been an amazing experience. With arthritis progressing in my hand the time has come, however, to hang up my apron. 😔

Best wishes, all.

Greetings bread fans!
Although not my normal Saturday, Bread Craft will be at the Whitley County Farmers Market this weekend. Tomatoes are starting to make their appearance at some of the veggie vendors—and Bread Craft bread is the perfect accompaniment.

Just imagine—bruschetta on Italian Semolina

A big tomato sandwich on Jalapeño-Cheddar
 or
a BTL on toasted Sourdough. đŸ€”

Every heard of ‘Rainy Day Bread?’ With that market getting rained out last weekend I froze most of what I made. I will be offering this frozen bread at a discount.

Whether you are after fresh or frozen bread this Saturday, stop by and say Hi!

The weather is suppose to be great!

Greetings, bread fans!
Saturday morning, pop down to the Whitley County Farmer's Market in downtown Columbia City and check out all the great Fall veggies, hand-made stuff, and of course, Bread Craft!

With temperatures cooling off, Fall comfort food has been on my mind. What have I been baking up for this weekend?

Bread Craft Sourdough (goes great with everything)
I have been thinking about hardy soups with this bread and not just as sidecar accompaniment -- French Onion is a fan fav with melty cheese resting on a piece of sourdough floating on a rich stock. Too much for a busy weeknight -- try Garlic Soup with Poached eggs, fragrant broth with a lot of garlic, toaded bread in the bottom of the bowl, add a poached egg, toss in cilantro, and serve with lime wedges.

Jalapeno-Cheddar bread -- Looking for a quick dinner, try a SAVORY twist on French Toast. Slices of Jalapeno-Cheddar bread, beat up some eggs (don't add sweet species or sweetener to the mix), place into a hot pan (or griddle), melt whatever kind of cheese you have on hand as soon as you flip the bread over. Top with some fresh pepper and dive in.

For my Whole & Ancient Grain bread this week, I decided to try out a formula that brings together Old World grain with New World seeds -- Kamut Wheat with Sprouted Quinoa (see below). A limited number of loaves are available.

- Kamut wheat was grown in ancient Egypt and was the dominant wheat they used for bread. It has a lovely bright yellow color with a buttery, nutty flavor.

- Quinoa, an essential food in the ancient Incan diet (New World Peru), is a seed with a slightly nutty taste similar to brown rice, but with sprouted, this flavor dawns out and takes on more earthy, grassy nuances.

Together -- they complement each other in flavor and nutrition. The bread has a wonderfully bright nutty, earthy taste and is higher in protein, amino acids, and essential micronutrients.

Happy Fall, everyone!
Autumn introduced itself on Wednesday, and what goes with Fall? Football games. Colored leaves. ..... and BREAD! Nothing pairs better with a comforting Fall dinner than good, handcrafted bread.

This Saturday at the Whitley County Farmers Market, Bread Craft will welcome Autumn 2021 with Sourdough, Jalapeno-Cheddar bread, Baguettes, and a couple of Whole Grain/Ancient grain loaves.

Last week I introduced Sprouted Whole Wheat--the first in a series of Whole and Ancient Grain-based bread I am exploring. This weekend I will have a limited number of loaves of this specialty bread.

Joining it will be a new Ancient Grain-rooted bread -- EINHORN with WHOLE WHEAT.

What is Einhorn? It is the first and oldest form of wheat. Often referred to as "human's first wheat," archaeologists date its domestication to between 8,650 and 7,950 BCE. (that's between 10,600 to 9,900 years ago!)

Like all wheat, it contains gluten, but Einkorn is easier to digest and contains more protein and anti-oxidants than modern wheat. It has a nutty, sweet, slightly grassy flavor that is brighter than modern wheat. When blended with strong flours (whole wheat and bread flour) that help ensure rise and good bread structure, Einkorn's unique flavor is unmistakable.
Interesting Facts:

- Einkorn means "single grain' in German
- Bits of Einkorn wheat were found with the iceman mummy (Ötzi) dating to 3100 BC. [Ötzi was discovered September 1991 by hikers in the Ötztal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy]

Check out Bread Craft and all of the Whitley County Farmers Market Market vendors this Saturday. Open opens at 8 am.

Hello, Bread fans,
Bread Craft will be at the Whitley County Farmers Market tomorrow (Saturday) with fan-favorite breads (Sourdough, Jalapeno-Cheddar, and Baguettes), PLUS a new 'kid' -- Sprouted Whole Wheat (Ancient & Whole Grains Bread)

Ancient & Whole Grain Breads
Did you know that Bread Craft's tagline is "Artisan Bread with a History?" Bread Craft grew out of my passion for art history, history, and food history. I am fascinated by how people domesticated grains, what they did with them, and how this impacted culture.

Over the past 2 market years, there has been a growing number of requests for whole and ancient grain breads. I am getting by to Bread Craft's beginning and have been playing around getting back to the basics with ancient and whole grains.

This week, I will have a few Sprouted Whole Wheat bread -- I guess you could say I am rocking bread crafting old school!
See ya Saturday morning!

(Watch for other Ancient & Whole Grain breads in the coming weeks)

Ah--- Labor Day weekend!
Like many, I think of this 3-day weekend as the last long weekend of the summer. But it also means fall fruits like peaches, apples, grapes, and pears. Let's not forget the array of fall veggies: winter-keeper onions, and squash, pumpkins (ok -- I know pumpkins are technically a squash--you don' carve a jack-o-lantern from butternut!), and the final hurrah for summer tomatoes. Although I hate seeing summer produce start disappearing when I think of the fall harvest, my cooking brain turns to whip up chutneys, jellies, and all kinds of plant-based butters. I mean, crisp fall morning with coffee and pumpkin butter on good bread. Ahhhh....

Bread Craft has changed in its Fall schedule for the Saturday Whitley County Farmer's Market (more on that below), and I will be at the market bright and early Saturday with bread to help you welcome in Fall!

Think of a relaxing morning on your porch with a cup of coffee, homemade grape jelly (also at the market), on a slice of toasted sourdough.

A spicy-sweet tomato chutney (recipe below) on a piece of grilled Jalapeno-Cheddar bread would be tasty with anything you can slap on the grill. Maybe you want to toast the last bites of summer with a glass of wine (or beverage of your choice), a baguette, and garden-ripe tomato bruschetta.

So, Saturday morning, kick off your Labor Day weekend with a visit to the Whitley County Farmer's Market and stop by Bread Craft to grab your loaf of bread-a-licious goodness to welcome fall and celebrate all the achievements of America's workers!
See ya there!

Hello, bread fans!
It’s the Dog Days of Summer. Kids are back in school, and Fall is just around the corner; but for now, we are still enjoying the peak flavors of summer – ripe garden tomatoes, zucchini (everyone has tons!), cucumbers off the vine, sweet corn, and one of my favorites – melons of any kind!

What partners with all veggies? Good bread, of course!

Kick-off your Saturday morning with a visit to the Whitley County Farmers Market and stop by Bread Craft for a loaf. Tomorrow I will have:
- Traditional Sourdough
- Jalapeno-Cheddar
- Baguettes
- And at least 1 offering of focaccia

People sometimes ask me what they can do with Bread Craft bread. Oh, so many possibilities—

Last Sunday, I whipped up a Bacon, Spinach, and Onion Strata – think of it as a breakfast casserole with good bread, eggs, sautĂ©ed spinach, and onions, with a bacon and some parmesan cheese for good measure.

My husband has been known to grab half a baguette, cut lengthwise, slathered a little olive oil and garlic on it, topped it with fresh sliced tomato and Thyme, added a bit of cheese, and put it on the grill. And I am wanting to try whipping up a savory bread pudding—good bread and zucchini, seasoned with Thyme and Rosemary (gotta find something to do with all those Zuccs!)

See you Saturday!

The weather folks predict a break in the rain this weekend! Perfect for a trip to the Whitley County Farmers Market in downtown Columbia City.

Bread Craft will be at the market with a hand-crafted, sourdough-based bread.

This weekend maybe you are in the mood for Traditional Sourdough -- always a favorite and is the perfect all-around bread. With fresh produce from the market, try it in Panzanella! (Italian tomato, cucumber, and crispy homemade croutons –yummy!).

Try to spice it up a bit, then Jalapeno-Cheddar – a market favorite – is for you.  So, many ways to use this bread. It makes fantastic ham sandwiches, is awesome grilled or toasted. Breakfast anyone? Try it with eggs your way.

Pretty baguettes might be in order if bruschetta, crostini, or grilled garlic bread. Are you looking for a new twist on Nacho? Use the baguette to whip up a batch of Sicilian Nachos (https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/sicilian-nachos/ ).

With summer veggies coming, look for new focaccia – Zucchini with Fresh Herbs. Talk about scrumptious! This focaccia takes zucchini to a whole new level (according to my hubby!)

See you on Saturday!!

Greetings Bread Lovers!
Bread Craft will be at the Whitley County Farmer’s market this Saturday (June 19). It’s looks like it will be a great weekend for all sorts of outdoor activities! No mater what is on your food docket for the weekend, I have a prefect bread compliment. Maybe sandwiches and a picnic on (or at) the lake calling your name — my Jalapeño - Cheddar bread will up your sandwich game.

You might be having friends and family over for a evening of grilln’ and chilln’ — I will have 2 types of Genoese style Focaccia on Saturday. This thick, fluff on the inside bread is an Italian staple, and a terrific summer-time bread. Toast it up and serve as part of an appetizer plate. Warm it in foil and it compliments any meat, seafood or veggie dish you can dream up. This weekend — Roasted Garlic and Traditional (topped with corse sea salt) will be on hand at the booth.

Of course, baguettes are a must for bruschetta, and they make amazing garlic bread with or without cheese.

Rounding out this weekend’s bread is the traditional Sourdough — how can you go wrong?

See you on Saturday in downtown Columbia City!
