Recently, we examined a trend regarding the dwindling sources of rPET. Demand for recycled polyester fabric is growing (that’s the good news). Yet, the number of bottles that consumers recycle hasn’t kept pace, especially in the U.S. We looked at a couple of important ways consumers and businesses can help lower barriers and change our behavior around recycling.

What if more apparel companies and fiber brands offered bottle or fiber recovery programs too? Allowing customers to send in post-consumer PET or donate it at the point of purchase could help the supply problem. Brands could incentivize customers by offering them a discount on new products when they recycle their old plastic and polyester. Some brands including Reformation, Levi's, The North Face, H&M, Madewell and ZARA are already doing this with success.

These 6 Brands Offer Textile Recycling Programs to Keep Your Clothes Out of Landfills We rounded up some of the best textile recycling programs and called out which ones offer incentives for shoppers.

The percentage of plastics recycled in the US looks rather dismal compared to other developed counties. There are plenty of ways we could improve our efforts and effectiveness across the diverse recycling processes in the US, but it all starts at the bin. Whether at home, the office or at the bin on the street, make sure your recyclables are put in the correct place.

As consumers' appetite for recycled polyester products grows, the industry is facing an unintended consequence: There may not be enough plastic bottles available for recycling to meet the demand.

The U.S. falls behind on recycling compared to other nations, while being the biggest consumer of them all. What can we do to change this?

Happy New Year from SAYA! Are you pondering a New Year's Resolution? Consider upping your plastic recycling effort. Here are a few ideas:

Create a more effective recycling station at home or the office.

Take a few more minutes during clean-up to rinse and recycle rather than throwing a soiled container into the trash.

Write a letter or make a call to your local waste department to find out what progress is happening toward more efficient recycling.

When out on the trails or in nature, carry a bag to collect discarded recyclables and trash and redirect them toward the recycling center.

Old fashioned polyester was notorious for its stink. But advancements in fiber technology has eliminated that problem entirely. When looking to purchase recycled polyester fabrics, look for those that offer certified antibacterial performance over dozens of washes. They should also be non-irritating to the skin and non-leaching. The best antibacterial treatments are infused into the fiber rather than treated on top of the fabric. The best recycled polyester maintains its shape and strength over time. This means consumers can keep it in circulation much longer, reducing their overall carbon footprint. Durability also means that recycled polyester clothing can be recycled again and again without losing its integrity. The best recycled polyester fibers offer optimal stretch and recovery using recycled fibers (and no rubber). SAYA utilizes a proprietary fiber structure to maximize the stretch ratio and durability while also offering moisture management to keep you dry.

We talk a lot about recycling old plastic bottles into new recycled polyester fabric. But how about textile recycling?

How are old or scrap fabrics recycled into new products? The truth is, waste fabric can be just as harmful to our environment as discarded PET. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the average American throws away about 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles every year. Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that textile trash makes up almost 6 percent of all municipal solid waste. Read our latest blog for more information about this reality and for some practical information on how we can move the notch toward more complete circularity.

Bank Of America Sees Five Megatrends Behind Sportswear | SGB Media Online 06/10/2021

Sustainability is one of the five “megatrends” expected to drive sports apparel and footwear identified by Bank of America (BofA) and reported on by SGB Media. SAYA is seeing that trend too. BofA reports “More brands are engaging in sustainability initiatives, both within their product offering and supply chains. We believe sustainability is an emerging driver of differentiation and brand heat, which resonates with younger generations who are most conscious of the environmental impact.”

We see consumers and brands wanting to confirm that the source of the fiber in the fabric of their products is indeed sustainable. For SAYA that means providing traceability for the source of the recycled PET used to make our fiber be it plastic bottles or recycled fabric scrap.
