In 1991, Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar negotiated his surrender to the authorities and was jailed on his own luxurious La Catedral.

The agreement with the Colombian Government specified that Pablo Escobar would surrender and serve a maximum term of five years if he would not be extradited to the United States. He also added conditions like he would build his prison to his specifications and that he should have the right to hand-pick his guards.

In addition to the extravagant features of La Catedral, a truck would come inside the complex to bring “necessities” for Escobar. The truck would hide either his family, friends, professional football players or female guests to visit him. He also hosted several parties and continued to traffic co***ne even when imprisoned.

However, after Escobar tortured and killed two cartel members at La Catedral, authorities decided to move him to a less-accommodating prison. Before he could be transferred, he escaped in July 1992. He had served just thirteen months of a five-year sentence.
