In 1717 a young boy casts his lot with the marauding crew of an infamous pirate on the rise. He bears witness and comes of age in a time that will come to be known as The Golden Age of Piracy. His mentor is none other than Edward Teach, who will be known to history as Blackbeard. He is a cruel and unforgiving man who recognizes no flag but his own, who will go to any length to plunder and wreak vengeance on his enemies. Both real and perceived. He leaves behind rumors of a priceless treasure, never proven nor found. But the boy knows, if only he can survive to tell the tale.
While vacationing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, renowned archeologist Nick LaBounty finds himself inexorably drawn to the enigma of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Left to fend for themselves in 1587, 120 colonists, including Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, disappear with only a single clue left behind. The word Croatoan, carved into a tree near their deserted stockade, will be found in 1590 by her supposed rescuers and grieving grandfather.
Investigating the oldest missing persons case ever in the United States, Nick finds the fate of the Lost Colony inextricably linked to another unsolved mystery that took place nearby. To a place only a day’s sail from the stockade of the colonists, to where Blackbeard and his brethren hid among the barrier islands and inlets and preyed upon the unsuspecting.
