IF I GRADED PAPERS THE WAY LIT JOURNALS RESPOND TO SUBMISSIONS
by Jude Atwood
Dear Student,
Thank you for entrusting me with this research paper.
I also want to apologize for how long it took me to get back to you with a grade. Please know it has nothing to do with your work but with the large number of assignments I receive.
Rest assured that your work received careful consideration.
Grading will always be a difficult and imperfect task—I receive so many intriguing papers.
I sincerely appreciated the chance to experience your work.
I found that it took my attention more than most papers that cross my desk.
After careful consideration, I am returning this paper to you.
Unfortunately, it is currently not for me.
I don't feel it's a good fit for this assignment.
Although I greatly appreciated you allowing me the chance to consider your work, I've chosen to give it an F.
I was unable to give it a passing grade.
I’m sorry that I’m not contacting you with better news.
I do appreciate your interest in this class.
Thank you for thinking of my course requirements.
Please know that this is not a reflection on your worth as a writer.
Meanwhile, I wish you all good things.
While this particular paper doesn't work for me, I'd be happy to consider assignments from you in the future.
Please don't let this deter you from submitting more work, since that is a class requirement.
Onward!
Thanks again.
Be well.
Best wishes,
Your professor
I just found out Maybe There Are Witches was selected for the Kids Club Playlist at Libro.fm!
WHAAAAAT?!? Yay!!!
(Two other observations: it’s on sale right now, and the people who made the Kids Club logo seem to think eleven-year-olds listen to books the way people listened to concept albums in the 70s.)
Hey Facebook-land!
I’ll be signing books at the Irvine Spectrum Barnes & Noble in Irvine, California, this Saturday, October 28, from 1pm-3pm.
I expect this will involve me sitting at a table, smiling awkwardly as people walk by trying not to make eye contact, so if you’re in the area, stop by and make eye contact with me!
When I go through difficult times, I am aways reminded of the last words of my great aunt:
“Aaaah! A crucifix!”
Chicago, here I come!
Or, more accurately--Chicago suburbs, here I come!
It's hard to believe my Halloween visit to Orland Park (on Saturday) and Vernon Hills (on Sunday) is this weekend. I'm a huge fan of Marcie Roman, and I'm thrilled that she'll be joining me.
If you're in the area, I'd love to see you!
Please feel free to share this.
Some conversations are timeless.
It’s tomorrow in Los Angeles! (Sunday, October 8, 11:30am)
Have a chocolate chip cookie and hear me tell weird stories about my childhood at the Book Jewel.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY
I'm doing a short presentation and reading at 11:30am at The Book Jewel in Los Angeles. There will be cookies. There's a farmers' market next door. A good time will be had by all.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone you know in the L.A. area!

I really liked this book, so it’s cool to see it getting a shout-out.

I’ll be at the Orange County Children’s Book Festival on Sunday, October 1, on the main stage at 12:25pm and then at the Mysterious Galaxy booth at 1:00pm.
The festival is held at a place called “Orange Coast College” in a city called “Costa Mesa.” I’ve heard it’s easy to find, so I look forward to journeying there!
Since I wrote a spooky book about witches and small town adventures, I figured I should plan some events in the lead-up to Halloween. So here’s my Spooky Season Schedule featuring all my October events in Costa Mesa, Los Angeles, the Chicago area, and Irvine.
Come see me and say hi!
Going into the woods on a late summer day is a feast for your senses, because it *looks* like an impressionist painting and it *smells* like pine and earth and petrichor and it *feels* like mosquitoes biting you over and over and over.
Hey, Chicago-land!
I’ll be in the suburbs speaking at two book events at Barbara’s Bookstores: October 21 at 1pm in Orland Park, and October 22 at 1pm in Vernon Hills.
I’m doing a presentation with the amazing award-winning middle-grade author Marcie Roman, and I’d love to see you there!
Each event will last about an hour.
Please feel free to share this post!
The corny thing is, whenever I’m out somewhere & “Hey Jude” starts playing, I really do start to make it better.
"I highly recommend this book to young audiences as a spooky read during Halloween time, but it is also enjoyable for older audiences and acts as a reminder to not grow out of the fun of believing in magic."
So excited to see MAYBE THERE ARE WITCHES reviewed in Independent Book Review today!
Book Review: Maybe There Are Witches by Jude Atwood MAYBE THERE ARE WITCHES by Jude Atwood is a fantastical mystery that rewards readers with delightful misdirections and surprises. Check out what Samantha Hui has to say in her book review of this Fitzroy Books' novel.

I made a list, because listmaking is how most discourse about books occurs in 2023 CE.
My list is "The best books for young readers that treat the supernatural with a clever sense of humor." So if that's the sort of thing that intrigues you, check out my list!

Some words to ponder as we head into this weekend.
The good news is, she can read.
The bad news is, she takes everything literally.
It’s my novel’s one-month bookiversary! Er, bookthday?
Maybe There Are Witches was released exactly one month ago. Since that day, I’ve met 150 people at bookstores in 6 cities, I’ve driven 700 miles, I’ve done interviews on 2 podcasts and 4 blogs, and reached #1 on 2 esoteric bestseller lists. I’ve also been lucky to create countless memories with writers, readers, and friends. Here’s to arbitrary milestones! May there be many more! 🍾
GUESS WHAT, PORTLAND?
I've got one more bookstore event scheduled this summer, and it's going to be lovely.
Come hear me (briefly) discuss and read from my new novel, and then watch me scrawl on title pages with a colorful marker!
And you can check out Portland's oldest independent children's bookstore, support a locally-owned business, and come see one of their first middle-grade author visits since Lemony Snicket!
Happy birthday to Tom Cruise and Franz Kafka!
New web page just dropped.
“Atwood makes Biskopskulla spring to life with the unexpected menace of Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes.”
