I attended the 2023 AUSA annual meeting with senior leaders and international partners this week. It was a great experience to listen to Chief of Staff of the Army lay out four focus areas and listen to our Chief of Army Reserve and other leaders during forums and discussions.
I co-hosted a panel with CSM John Raines, the CSM of the Army National Guard. We discussed the impacts of messaging the “Be All You Can Be” campaign past, present, and future and how branding and messaging can help with recruitment and retention. Leaders need to back the message up with action and engaged leadership.
I joined Army Command level CSM’s as a panel member at the Sergeant Major of the Army’s professional forum discussing NCO roles found in FM 7-0 (Training) and FM 3-0 (Operations). I fielded various questions but I focused on how the US Army Reserve delivers combat ready units to Forces Command through tough training preparing for War-fighting to win as a total team. We continually strengthen our profession to be more proficient at training management and we are continually transforming to meet the needs of the future.
During his initiatives brief, the SMA reiterated that we, as a total Army, need to get back to the basics focusing on War-fighting. SMA Weimer stated, “Soldiers need to focus on a masters or PhD in Warfighting.” For us, that means attaining the appropriate proportion between training on common skill level tasks and job specialty proficiency.
I challenge my NCOs to understand 8 step training model and come prepared to lead training at BA- there is no point attending as a mere participant. Take some time in the self development domain and read what FM 7-0 and 3-0 covers.
NCOs need to enforce standards and discipline. To enforce them, junior NCOs need clarity in some standards. The SMA has commissioned the development of an Army blue book to clarify these standards in order to strengthen the profession!
This We’ll Defend.

Happy Day!
Koreans are celebrating one of the most meaningful holidays of the year. Let's take a look at the origin of Hangul Day.
October 9th is a South Korean national holiday held in honor of the invention of the Korean writing system, which experts have called the most “scientific” writing system ever devised. It was created in the 1440s by a committee of scholars commissioned by King Sejong. King Sejong, also known as Sejong the Great, was a great supporter of literature, science, and technology in his day. One of their major assignments was to come up with a writing system to represent the Korean language.
At that time, Korean was written with Chinese characters. Learning to use Chinese characters, along with the adjustments required in adapting them to the Korean language, was a very difficult process, requiring years of education and training. This meant that literacy was only available to a tiny elite. Sejong wanted to open literacy to the general population, but that would require a system that was easier to learn.
