Importance of Folate for Women
Jimalalud, Negros Oriental - Folic acid is a form of B vitamin. It is the synthetic form of folate or Vitamin B9, an essential nutrient that every woman should take. If a woman is planning to get pregnant or is pregnant, she already knows the important ways to ensure a healthy pregnancy and one of those ways is taking enough folic acid. Folic acid is even more important during pregnancy because it protects the unborn babies against neural tube defects (NTDs). Neural tube defects are birth defects of the spinal cord known as spina bifida and of the brain known as anencephaly, but it can be prevented when pregnant women take folic acid as a prenatal vitamin or as a supplement.
It is not only important to take enough folic acid before pregnancy but pregnant women should also continue taking it throughout the pregnancy period for their own health and for their babies’ growth and development as well.

Calories in versus calories out
Calories are the amount of energy released when your body breaks down (digests and absorbs) food. They are usually found in the food that we eat. The more calories a food has, the more energy it can provide to your body. We need to consume a certain number of calories to provide us with the energy that is needed to function in our daily routine. The average calorie intake for men is around 2,500kcal a day while the average calorie intake for women is around 2,000kcal a day. However, these values still vary depending on age, size, and the degree of the physical activities we do daily.
Foods and drinks that contain high amounts of calories are those that are high in fat or sugar like fast foods and sodas while foods and drinks that contain fewer calories are those alternative foods and drinks like home-cooked meals with few vegetables and fruits in them and water, coffee, and tea.

Undernutrition has always been one of the biggest problems in Canlaon City and the reduction in the prevalence of underweight children has been one of the main focus in the fight against malnutrition. The city has initiated several projects, programs and activities that directly and in-directly addressed malnutrition to ensure a healthier and well-nourished community. These programs involves a multi-sectoral approach, the City Population Office, City Agriculture Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Health Office, with the cooperation of the 12 Barangays sa well as the non-government organizations of the Nutrition Committee. These are the following interventions but are not limited to: conduct of pabasa sa nutrisyon/idol ko si nanay; inclusion of nutrition education in pre-marriage counseling; establishment and maintenance of the Rehabilitation Center for Malnourished Children (mal-ward); increased budget in the city nutrition action plan; capacity building of health workers; integrated community food production; cooking demonstration to mothers with undernourished child(ren); 5K sa Unang 1K program; and organized an income generating project dubbed as “SIKAD, SAYAW, ug TIKANG: “Kabataan sa Canlaon atong Amumahon, MALNUTRISYON atong Sugpuon!” which will be implemented and organized every year onwards.
The main purpose of these programs is to reduce the prevalence rate of undernutrition thru the delivery of quality and integrated nutrition programs.
A comparison of the Field Health Services Information System 2014 and 2019 data showed an increase in infants exclusively breastfed, decrease in low birthweight prevalence, and increase in facility-based delivery. While the Operation Timbang data showed a decreasing trend in underweight from 2009 to 2019.
The addition of more nutrition programs is not necessary, the LGU just have to implement the nutrition program(s) that best address the existing problem(s). A multi-sectoral approach in the fight against malnutrition is the key to a healthier community.
