**Get off that train**

How many times have you had negative thoughts that keep pulling you away from happiness?

For example,
- You speak to a friend who has a habit of sharing their negative experiences all the time. After that conversation, you keep getting more negative thoughts and become anxious
- At work, you make a mistake, and your team has to work for hours together to resolve the issue. So next time when you have a similar situation, you get thoughts of low confidence, frustration and regret.

In life, we get into negative situations many times. Our mind starts building thoughts out of nowhere, and we feel stuck in them.

What we fail to realise is that thoughts are endless. Their purpose is to keep coming and going. No one thought can stay present for a long time unless we consciously allow it to persist.

There is a reason why we call them trains of thought. It's because if you get on the train they can take you away and it's hard to get back to where you started.
Imagine you boarded a train to go north, but the train went in a totally opposite direction. How good would that be?

Being aware of how we feel about a situation is critical because it's in those early moments that we have the option to get on or off that train.

Michael Neill, a known author, speaker and coach, tells us that the only option we have in such situations is understanding the importance of thought.

Thoughts do not have any existence when left alone. They take energy from our body and use it to sustain themselves. If we leave a thought alone, it will always go away because the next one is coming.

Eckhart Tolle, the author of The Power of Now, says that a simple way to get out of this thought trap is to start being aware of your breath, feel your feet touching the floor, and the sensations in your hands.

Becoming consciously aware of our physical body stops the train of negative thoughts from impacting us. We can use meditation and mindfulness practices to watch our thoughts.

To get away from a constantly appearing negative thought that drains our energy and will, conscious awareness of our physical form is vital.

Another way to get off the train to find a distraction that can disconnect you from the pull of negative emotions. It could be watching a short video, listening to a favourite song or reading something funny.

What you realise when you get off that train of thoughts is that there is always a different perspective to every situation.

Looking at our challenges logically can help us understand the root causes and give us the resources we need to move towards what we want.

**Keep your cool**

How many situations can you remember when someone lost their cool and behaved inappropriately?

Life always gives us challenges we can overcome even though sometimes it feels difficult. When circumstances are not in our control, negative emotions creep up, and we become stressed. We begin to think about all the possible negative scenarios and how we cannot control the outcomes we want.

We become affected by uncertainty and sometimes react to situations unpredictably. Living in this way has its apparent disadvantages, and the repercussions on our physical and mental well-being can be manifold.

The famous author, speaker and coach Michael O'Neill says that our mind is programmed to relax and remain in a meditative state by default. That's what happens when we sleep and relax after a long day's work.

The constant processing of our thoughts causes instability, and we lose the concept of keeping cool.

There are many examples of people who remain relaxed and in control of their emotional state. You can find them in sports all the time where pressure of performance and winning can make situations impossible to control.

While watching a recent James Bond movie, I was amazed at how he always found a way to stay relaxed and be present "in the moment" after a chaotic scene.

All of us have the same ability, albeit we need to practice. When some uncertain event happens, anxiety and negative emotions pull us, but our responses can significantly impact the final result if we can stay focused and relaxed.

Inner peace and staying relaxed amid chaos are choices that all of us have. Whenever there is uncertainty and apprehension, we have an opportunity to resist the urge to react. Instead, we can stay focused on the end goal and keep the big picture in our minds.

Like James Bond, practice remaining calm and focus on what you have to do next. Our mental well-being is in our hands, and no one can possess the remote control of our responses if we are in control.

- Recall a past experience where you behaved differently than you would of circumstances were different.
- What behaviors did you not like and would like to change?
- What's that one thing you can do today which will progressively change how you deal with a similar situation in the future?

**Winning is easy**

Have you been in a conversation with someone who always says the opposite to what you are saying?

For example: If you say, "What a beautiful weather?" they may tell you, "Yes, but it's unpredictable and can change anytime."

If you say,"Our team lost the match because they didn't play well", they may tell you,"Everyone is here to win and if one loses another one wins. Our team always plays well. They just had a bad day.".

Just like one person's glasses don't work fr another, we all see the world through a different lens of our beliefs and experiences.

Some people like to focus on the future and talk about what could happen and how their choices and decisions could impact their lives. Others focus using their past experiences to guide future decisions.

Understanding these differences can make a massive difference in how successful we are in creating good rapport, great connections and meaningful relationships.

The need of the hour is to acknowledge that everyone is trying to do the right thing and focusing on their success ion their own way.

To have win-win conversations, all we can do is concentrate on the big picture and grasp the higher purpose. We must tune out conflicting thoughts and focus on building connections that stick.

Giving power to our relationships is more critical than fuelling our egos. Life can change instantly, and we might end up ruing our decisions forever.

**Adapting to change breeds success**

Planning and prioritising are two activities that are used the most in today's world.

Responding to changes always precedes the above and every plan or priority is impacted when our response isn't very flexible.

When was the last time everything went as planned? Did you adapt to changes or feel stuck with no options?

Having alternate backup plans is assumed in business and sports. We anticipate failure and put controls to manage things thay could go wrong.

Recently while giving an online training, my laptop crashed and I had to quickly switch over to my mobile apps to deliver the presentation. Although it was a seamless experience for the people on the other side, I had to think on my feet and manage my delivery because customer service trumps everything.

In sports, if a key player in the team gets injured, the others rally around and work harder and smarter to achieve successful outcomes.

Now imagine applying this strategy to life decisions. For instance, we always expect positive feedback for our efforts but when we get a different response, how do you react? Negative thoughts and emotions are normal but our quick thinking and creatively managing the situation via appropriate backup strategies can be the difference that makes the difference.

Backup plans happen when we consider 2-3 alternatives and prepare. Positive thinking is good, but being unprepared is unacceptable in today's world..

For every task, have more than one way to get it done because accomplishing things is the key to success.

Recognizing the importance of backup plans is a proven strategy in business and sports, crucial for our survival.

1. Identify a task you're working on and think of 2-3 alternative approaches.
2. Practice adapting to unexpected situations with a positive mindset.

In life, we all make decisions that don't lead to the results we desire. Like a to-do list, we also have an option to create a "Won't Do" list to learn from our mistakes.

Interestingly, it's easier to write about what we don't want. While focusing on what we want is good, it doesn't come naturally to many.

A "Won't Do" list helps us understand our choices, challenges, opportunities and what's truly important. It clarifies our life direction.

**Process brings progress**

Do you remember the last time you worked on improving a skill? Did you go at your own speed or have a specific plan? What kind of emotions did you need to begin and thrive?

Life throws challenges our way every day, and without preparation, we often fall short of our own expectations.

When we concentrate on the steps, not just the end result, success is almost guaranteed. On the other hand, focusing solely on outcomes can lead to negative feelings like anger and anxiety, if things don't go according to plan.

The Bhagwad Gita suggests that the real benefits come from our actions.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) tells us we all have a built-in strategy for thinking and excellence. By recognizing our strategies, we can step out of our comfort zones create the life we always wanted.

The key is to start a process and stick with it. Any change needs commitment, discipline, and a process that fits us.

We also know this concept via habits. When we keep doing the same things because we like the process, it gradually becomes a habit. Making success a process or habit involves perseverance, discipline and focus.

Coaching Tips:

1. Pick one skill to improve. Break it into small steps, and focus on each step.

2. When faced with a challenge, think about the actions you can take, not just the end result.

3. Start a new process today โ€“ it could be as simple as a daily routine. Stick to it.

When it comes to learning a new skill, it's the same thing. We must keep the end goal in mind but continue to master the process because the fun is always in the journey not the destination.

**Our Words will Remain Forever**

Do you remember that warm feeling when your work got appreciated? Or the negative emotions when you last time had a disagreement with someone dear?

Our words are super powerful and stick with us. When we reflect on our past experiences, what we said then, is always in our subconscious. Similarly, people remember us not only for our actions but also for our words.

Our time is short, and those around us won't be here forever.

When we share kind, motivating, and positive words, it creates a vibe and energy that spreads in the universe. This energy stirs up emotions, and since we all crave happiness, words stick with us the most.

**Set and Reset Your Standards**

When was the last time someone inspired you to do something towards what you want?
What actions or behaviors left the strongest impression on you? And how did that inspiration change you?

We are often influenced by those who bring out the best in us because of the standards they set. A random act of compassion could spark that fire we needed to go out there make life better. A step towards success could be ignited by just observing a sporting game.

In life, we all establish our own standards for success, happiness and fulfillment. These standards reflect our core values, and the principles that matter most to us. For example: If one of my core values is "Learning", I might be influenced by someone who shares they knowledge everyday and I could be inspired to do the same thing.

The hidden thing is that we often unconsciously measure others against these standards. Setting standards is essential, but even more crucial is the discipline to uphold them consistently.

When we don't live in alignment with our standards, we experience internal conflicts. Negative emotions like anger, frustration, and resentment start to seep into our actions and behaviors.

Here's a simple exercise you could do today:

1. **Identify Your Core Values:** Start by recognizing the values that define how you want to live, act, and behave in all circumstances. What matters most to you?

2. **Prioritize Your Values:** Not all values are equally important. Determine which ones hold the highest significance for you. What values are at the top of your list?

3. **Align Actions with Values:** Once you've identified and prioritized your values, focus on aligning your actions and behaviors with these values. You'll notice that you're at your happiest when you live in harmony with your values.

Setting and living by your standards is a choice that's entirely within your control.

What if, just for today, you practiced these steps and felt the difference? What if, just for today, you decided to live in alignment with your values? How would that change your life?
