Just listened to this episode: 👍
I think most dedicated musicians have a fair bit of tunnel vision; it's possibly what got them into the demanding craft of music-making...but broadening your perspective is likely the key to making a career in the field!
Nice demo of a gorgeous instrument.
But this isn't about looks...mopane is a high-density African hardwood that is a sustainable alternative to grenadilla (blackwood). Of course, the sound of Mopane is slightly different (some might say sweeter, or gentler). It seems like a solid option to consider.
Just listened to TMAP's latest episode - I'd be quite interested to try an app that monitors clarinet attacks and releases! (TonalEnergy doesn't have enough granularity)

"We live in a machine world. So, people can show up on the street with a jackhammer at 7, 7:30 AM and that's legal - no one's going to stop them. That's a much bigger disturbance than a little woodwind in the woods."
The vid is about playing the Shakuhachi flute outside, but the same idea surely applies to any woodwind player making sounds on their instrument, be it an apartment or one's backyard, etc.!

If you don't have much experience with choosing a new instrument, it's difficult to communicate your preferences and organize your impressions. I reckon that most clarinet sellers only offer surface-level specifications, but the reality is that even within a specific model, each instrument has unique characteristics.
I'm excited to spread the word about Lisa's Color-Ring System, which captures those finer details by clearly differentiating the foundation, shape, and color of sound in each specific clarinet. With this communication tool, you can move beyond vague descriptors and start making confident comparisons between instruments.

Does the passage of time come with a tendency to settle into one's ways? I call it "ossification of taste," and I see it happen to folks both young and old.
I believe that regularly challenging one's worldview ("lifeview") is a crucial part of the human experience.
This article offers a few solid ways to jumpstart that process.
As a professional musician, instrument distributor, or music store retailer, your day-to-day success depends on your creative state. To read more click on blog link here: https://musicconnect.blog/five-way-to-pump-up-your-creative-energy/
Excellent opportunity alert! Full-time clarinet repair position in IL.
I liked these Manevich études so much that I decided to record the entire book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqzanIRYGV0
Not the pristine audio rendition I yearned for - I only gave myself a few shots at each one when recording - but I hope their availability might catch some other clarinetist's consideration!
They are simply fun to play, and decently challenging for anyone who has finished the Rose 32.

Woodwind players: what do you do when something goes wrong with your instrument at the concert? And even outside of emergency situations, if you live near (within 30 min.) an excellent repair tech, then you are one of the lucky ones. Simply put, there are not nearly enough instrument repair people in this big country.
Lisa's Clarinet Shop aims to change that with a suite of clarinet/sax/flute repair courses for band directors or private teachers, and even more advanced training for those who wish to make it a profession.
They are held in a live virtual classroom setting (additionally including recorded video access for later reference).

I'm delighted to be a new member of the Customer/Ambassador Care team at Lisa's Clarinet Shop.
I've actually been a thoroughly satisfied customer of Lisa Canning for many years, having purchased my current set of beautiful Buffet R13s from her. Lisa's process of matching the player to the instrument through the trial process is truly special, and you owe it to yourself to consider her shop for any clarinet in your future (mail order trials let you try them at home!).
If you want to buy (or sell) a clarinet, or if you're interested in learning instrument repair, please don't hesitate to drop me a message here, or through email.
