One of the most unique things about the tributes paid this week to the Late President Mwai Kibaki was the lack of incessant use of the common phrase "He was a man of the people" to describe him. This phrase is actually the least descriptive and yet one of the greatest compliments in our society you can ever give a person in death.
For this reason, we are happy that people focused on the one thing that truly made President Kibaki a unique and transformative leader - his superior intellect and the ability to use it to empower others to use their own intellectual capabilities for good.
And please note, we deliberately did not use the word “highly educated.” You can still have superior intellect and be transformative even if you did not step into a classroom.
It is well documented that the late President was to a certain extent introverted, a man who never traveled in an entourage, hated gossip, and most of all shunned sycophancy. These are the qualities that most likely made him seem aloof.
Actually, Kibaki's personality and mannerisms are quite in line with that of many great world leaders, inventors, scholars, and even entertainers just to name a few.
It is interesting to note that people of great intellect are generally the most unassuming people you will ever meet, and, in most cases, they enjoy their own company except when it is absolutely necessary to be out in the public.
And that is why it is always anti-climactic to meet these people in person - since their private personas are so underwhelming as compared to the public personas we see on TV.
These people are very secure in who they are and know that their singular intellectual power can change and transform those around them for the better (and sadly sometimes for the worse).
This explains why Kibaki went around doing his work in an unassuming manner for more than 50 years but yet always captured our imagination due to the results of his work.
It is also true that Kibaki was satisfied with his BSC in Finance with Distinction from the London School of Economics and did not go hunting for Honorary Degrees. Flawed he was, but he never lost sight of what was important for this country.
The level of discussion in our History254 Facebook group is a sharp reminder that there are many Kenyans with that superior intellect that Kibaki possessed and that transformative approach that he embodied.
With the many challenges in front of us, some of our own making, and many beyond our control - Kenya certainly needs another Kibaki like never before.

Our vision for History254 - Archiving Kenya's History is to be a space to learn and preserve Kenyan history. To that end, we have enjoyed the transfer of knowledge from the older generation to the younger generation. It is in that spirit that we very happy to present a content-rich video by "Tony" Ndimu Muiva on behalf of History254 - Archiving Kenya's History looking at the traditional Maasai marriage. Tony visited with the Rev. (Rtd) Joseph Ole Kasio from Kiserian who is a member and an elder of the Ilaiser clan of the Maasai as part of this mission to preserve history and ensure that all information presented is accurate. With the able narration of Ntayia Leina and Hilda Reson and Tony, we really delve into the intricate process of the Maasai marriage process that sometimes begins with an unborn child. Hope you enjoy and do not forget to Subscribe to our Youtube channel.

" If we are to retrieve a national direction we must know its historical architects and know its design. In a changing Kenya, and over many decades, Senior Chief Koinange kept a focus, clarity and consistency. These are particularly relevant today to meaningful change and its management. There is no absence of ideology in our history. There is only its suppression and attempted erasure."
