Today 4 Kids

Today, after leaving Costco, we pull up to a red light where a guy is standing on the boulevard holding various signs right beside us. I have a lot on my mind this week and am not in an open mood at the moment (plus costco was waaaay busy) so I avoid eye contact as I don’t have any cash on me to help the guy out.

The four year old in the back seat notices him and asks if Smile Cookies are back yet. This jolts me out of my space as I realize that she is remembering when we gave a guy my smile cookie at an intersection a year and a half ago. (It may even be the same guy) I reply that they are not but it would be nice if they were. The 6 year old realizes what we are talking about, also remembers and asks me if I have money but I don’t have cash on me.

The light turns green and as I start pulling away, I realize that I have a bag of groceries beside me that could be shared but I missed the opportunity. The kids continue talking about all the things they could do for this man. So I ask if they think he would like some raspberries. They scream yes unanimously so at the next intersection, I turn off and head back to where we saw the man standing on the boulevard.

I pull up and have to wave at him to get his attention as we are 4 or 5 cars back this time. He comes over and I explain that I don’t have any cash but ask if he would he like some raspberries and maybe a chocolate milk. His face lit up; he was so surprised. Then he said that the kids should have them and I told him that they wanted to share them with him and prompted me to turn around and come back. He laughed and thanked them. The light changed and we wished each other a wonderful day.

The kids cheered and danced in the back of the van, so happy to help someone. The 6 year old proclaimed him to be the luckiest guy on the street. 🥰

While we did a kind and generous thing today, it is mostly on my mind that a year and a half ago, the four year old was only three and still remembers this small act of kindness all this time later. Sometimes these small things we do, imprints and affects them years later. It can become a part of their personality. And today, I reinforced that kind thoughtfulness and behaviour.
