Art Occasionally
Iowa photographer occasionally creating some art.
For years I've had a bad habit of thinking there isn't a good photo to be taken around here and not even trying to find one. So I've been working on looking at things differently, looking for compositions differently, shooting things even in the moment I don't find immediately interesting, and it's super refreshing.
I try to take a non-work related photo every day (it doesn't happen about 60% of the time, but that's not important), so here's one I took while I was grilling on my deck.
I didn't even know this was happening until I started seeing posts on Facebook at about 10:30 last night. I'll have to be more prepared next time, this one caught me off guard.
Did you know that the average cumulus cloud weighs about 500 metric tons? Me either. Anyway, here's a photo of a little cloud and some big clouds.
Did you know bleachers are called bleachers because back in the day they were wooden and would get bleached by the sun?
Now you do. You're welcome.
Awfully weird looking sky. And why's the grass upside down?
Today's shot:
Two Birds Four Wires
Okay so giving names to photos isn't my forte, big whoop.
I've been working on getting out of my stylistic comfort zone lately. This one worked out way better than I thought it would.
Anyway. Here's a photo of a wall and some windows.
Anybody recognize it?
If you're from around here, and you don't, I'll bet you would if it were in color.
Think blue.
Worst eclipse ever, am I right?
Anyway. Here's my photo.
It was probably no more than 30 seconds after this shot that it went behind the clouds and has been there ever since.
I had a different shot planned out, but with the weather not cooperating, I wasn't willing to spend half the day on it. So this was pretty much a last-ditch effort just to get *something*. Actually, it was the back-up to my last-ditch effort...
And I gotta say...I'm pretty happy with how it worked out.
Prints are available for anyone that may be interested.
Another impromptu storm shoot, this one less spectacular than the last. It is an interesting cloud formation though. This is what's bearing down on us in Kingsley right now.
Today's storm.
It seems the most photogenic storms are always the small, fast moving ones, and that makes getting decent photos of them a challenge.
I was driving west to Kingsley when I noticed those awesome rolling, silky clouds that only come around every so often (*these* aren't exactly what I saw, these are more turbulent). Of course, I didn't have my camera, and by the time I turned north towards Kingsley, they were past me, moving quickly to the northeast.
I watched the sky for a minute once I got home, a little disappointed that I missed the opportunity to catch the front rolling through town.
But I *really* wanted a shot of those clouds, so I figured, what the hell, I'm gonna see if I still can't get out in front of it somehow. So I raced it (obviously following all traffic laws and definitely no speeding, Mom).
I think I probably could have gotten to where I wanted, more on the northern side of it, but after 20 miles, I decided to just find a decent area quick and see what comes of it while I had the chance.
I didn't have time to find any great compositions. This was pretty much "get the drone in the air, shoot the shot, bring it down." The drone was in the air for no more than five minutes, and the rain started no more than 60 seconds after landing.
An interesting shot, sure.
But one of these times I'm actually gonna be ready for the storm and be able to grab something with more intent and thought behind it.

This is art, right?
I meant it when I said "occasionally".
Welcome to Art...Occasionally.
Formerly known as Ballistic Art, I've changed the name because, honestly, that one - much like this weather - blows and just doesn't fit what I wanna do here.
Here is where I will be posting what some may call Art...Occasionally.
I don't know what it will be. I don't know how often it will be. But it will be occasionally.
The plan is that most everything posted here will be available to be printed. See something you'd like to hang on your wall? Message me and we'll make it happen.
Personally, I think this panorama of Kingsley, "First Snow", would look awesome printed 36" wide and hung in a nice black frame.
See what I mean in the comments.
