What Types of Exercise Reduce Dementia Risk? 29/08/2022

Bottom line…get up and move!!!
Join me for online classes at Stay Inspired Fitness , find me at the gym, at Manor CC, or outdoor for in-person classes, or let’s go for a walk!

“Major studies have confirmed that regular physical activity — even nontraditional exercise, such as doing household chores — can play a substantial role in decreasing the risk of developing dementia.”

“Perhaps most encouragingly, the association between physical activity and a reduced risk of dementia extended to participants who had a family history of dementia.”

“After controlling for age, education and gender, the researchers found that participants who exercised regularly — defined as engaging in activities such as walking, running, swimming, dancing, participating in sports or working out at the gym — had a 17 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared with those who did not.

This meta-analysis shows that dementia prevention is not limited to one activity, or even one type of activity. Given the diversity of physical activities that participants engaged in, “we recommend to people to do the exercise that you like,” said Le Shi, a researcher at Peking University and one of the study’s authors.”

What Types of Exercise Reduce Dementia Risk? Several large studies have confirmed that vigorous exercise, walking and even doing household chores can greatly benefit the brain.

Two things stand out to me about this post.

It’s hard enough to believe this was 4 years ago, but it’s even harder to believe it’s been 22 months since I’ve seen my group at Leisure World. Missing them terribly. Definitely one of the more frustrating things about Covid...

The other thing is what I said then about how “exercising is not just a physical activity. It has such an impact on your emotional and mental well-being.” I think that hit home for so many of us over the past 20 months. So as I said 4 years ago, go outside and take a walk, go for a run, go for a bike ride, dance, go to the gym and take a class, come take a class with me...
It doesn’t matter what it is, just get up and move! (and if you need any help or motivation, just reach out!)

Seven years ago, I went way outside my comfort zone and got my first fitness certification. A few months later, Fitness First opened in Columbia and I had my own classes.
I didn't sleep much the night before my first class, and I was filled with nervous energy that morning as I drove to Columbia, but I did it! Fast forward to today, and I look at where I am now. Never in a million years would I have predicted this.
