Charges of murder for the murder of a Black man by the police. This is the accountability and action required when someone is murdered by the police. Quick investigation. Quick charges. Actions called “inhumane”. In this case, all five officers are Black. The quickness and the charges, the hurry to release the video and the choice of language is because the officers are Black.

LA County to pay family of Andrés Guardado $8 million for the wrongful death of their son 02/11/2022

Andres Guardado was killed right in the middle of the largest BLM protests. There is no amount of money that will bring that young man and his beautiful smile back to his parents.

When we have it all ready, we will take the items to the house and set up a "shopping spree" for the women. If you have items to donate or would like to volunteer to help in the sorting and setting up for the shopping spree drop us a note. Also, please distribute the attached fliers to your networks. Many know Cat Brooks as the raspy-voiced co-host of Upfront on KPFA (the Bay Area’s Pacifica radio station). Others know her as co-founder of of the Anti Police-Terror Project and director of Justice Teams Network. Some will recall that she ran for Mayor of Oakland against liberal-establishment Libby Schaaf in 2018. And, no one can forget the pivotal role that Cat Brooks played in demanding justice in the name of , who was killed in 2009 by BART police at Oakland’s Fruitvale Station.

Those in her circle know Cat to be one of the most principled, sharpest, outspoken, unrelenting leaders of the contemporary Black freedom movement. A quick mind, wit (and tongue) Cat pushes us all towards an abolitionist vision while maintaining winning strategies. Truly a woman of the people, she embraces and is embraced by families of those killed and harmed by police, people targeted by the criminal system of injustice, and those struggling from the deepest margins of society.

It may be her grounding in performance art that gives her such radical imagination, or her decades in struggle, or the loving and progressive way she parents her daughter. Cat is the most cherished of friends. She’s funny and laughs easily and deeply. Her embraces are warm, as is her heart. She is loyal and supportive beyond measure. Her deep love for the people…beyond theory…in actual practice…is palpable. She is unafraid to be a flawed, self-reflexive, full and complete human being…and to see, value, and revere the humanity in others. It is this deep and abiding love…among many other attributes…that makes her truly divine.

Public safety, the housing crisis, mental health services, public transportation...these are some of the main issues concerning Angelenos when thinking of which candidate to vote for this June in the primaries. The coalition have surveyed and hosted multiple participatory budget sessions and the people have spoken: what keeps our communities safe and healthy is NOT more funding for police, but more funding for services.

✊🏾Come out to Africa Town next Saturday March 26 at 3pm for the candidate forum, to see where candidates stand on the issues that affect Angelenos the most, what their budget priorities are, and why/why not they deserve your vote for office.

Greetings Black Lives Matter Family!

Happy Black History Month! As we vision and build Black futures, we are deeply committed to the African principle of Sankofa...that we must embrace and honor the freedom fighters, struggles, and lessons learned from the past as we chart the course forward.

Black History Month was founded initially as Negro History Week in 1926 by our honored Ancestor Dr. Carter G. Woodson and taken as month of remembrance by Black Student Union organizers at Kent State University in 1969. It was, and continues to be an expression of Black autonomy, not officially recognized by the U.S. government until 1976.

Since our birth, Black Lives Matter has always acknowledged that we are but one marker in the long struggle for Black freedom. Those who walked before us continue to serve as a source for us. Over the years, our Black History Month efforts have ranged from political education sessions, to social media posts, to arts initiatives.

This year, we are most excited about the deepened partnership with and the daily offering of Black history as political education by some of our leading Black radical intellectuals. Daily installments will be posted on our Instagram page: . It is our hope that these brief tellings of Black history will inspire us to struggle forward with renewed vigor and vision.

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is an American hero. He always was a hero but he wasn’t always popular. Do not be afraid to be unpopular.

“After he was gone the memory of King taking the struggle to Chicago, railing against the Vietnam War and economic injustice, emphasizing what was true in the Black Power movement, and organizing a Poor People’s Campaign faded into an unthreatening idealism. King became safe and ethereal, registering as a noble moralist. It became hard to remember why, or even that, King was the most hated person in America during his lifetime. But the King that we need to remember is the one who keenly understood what he was up against.”
