One of the coolest parts of Guanajuato? Its underground tunnels!

Back when Guanajuato was a mining town in the 1800s, the tunnel system was used to divert water from the flooding Rio Guanajuato which ran directly through the city. Nowadays, they’re used for motor traffic. You can descend into the tunnels through entrances like this to catch the bus or even walk along the footpaths (not super pleasant due to fumes).

The tunnels are not only an awesome part of history, but this unique infrastructure means that many of the above-ground roads can be used for pedestrian traffic.

What’s the difference between mezcal & pulque?

While both alcohols come from the maguey plant, Mezcal is made through a distillation process after cooking the piña, the heart of the plant. Pulque is made from aguamiel, the sap of the maguey plant which is then fermented.

📍We stopped by La Antigua in Guanajuato to sip a bit of both😉

Solo travel will change your life Traveling alone, I made the only footprints on foggy coasts in the early morning, stared skywards in the silence of the redwoods, journaled while seals wiggled their bodies onto the shore, and ate breakfast at my favorite place three times. Welcome to my Spanish school, CIQ!

I started with Spanish in high school and majored in Spanish in college. I practiced during my semester in Spain & volunteer work in Nicaragua, but alas, my speaking skills are a little rusty due to years without regular practice.

Luckily CIQ is a quick 10 minute walk from our apartment, so it’s easy for me to take private Spanish lessons twice a week! I’ve already noticed an improvement & it helps that I love spending time with my teacher, Lupita.

Side note: All the festive decorations are in preparation for Mexican Independence Day on September 16!

This weekend we did some *light* exploring in Tequisquiapan, a city full of pastel colors, rooftop restaurants and some of the most photogenic streets I’ve yet to encounter.

I know, it’s quite the mouthful- that’s why most people in Mexico just called it Tequis, hence the sign!
