Would you like a free pass to Maine’s state parks? The Third Place is collaborating with the Nature Based Education Consortium and other community partners to provide free individual and vehicle park passes to BIPOC(Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color) folks across Maine.

This is an amazing opportunity for anyone who identifies as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color may apply for these passes. With many barriers to outdoor access in Maine, this is a huge step towards providing outdoor access for all. These passes are not for the general public.

Hi Portland!

My name is Nyalat Biliew and I am running for candidacy for the at-large seat on the Portland School Board. I am a first generation immigrant, who is excited to represent and serve the community that raised me! I am also a proud alumni of Riverton Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School, and Deering High School. I am a community organizer who is very passionate about social, environmental, and economic justice. I am running for school board because I want to make sure that Portland Public Schools are a safe space for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to learn and be heard. I will use my experience and observations as a former student to identify where change is needed and can take place. I will fight for the inclusion and diversity that this School System critically needs. I will stand, represent and advocate for BIPOC students and their parents. I will work to close the gap of the involvement of Parents of Color in the School System. And most importantly, I will work to create a safe learning space for all students of color and students with marginalized identities.

Approximately a year ago, the school board held a public meeting to discuss the removal of SROs (School Resource Officers) at Deering and Portland high school. As a first generation immigrant and a black woman who has gone through the Portland Public Schools system, and having witnessed and experienced racial violence at the hands of the police, it was distressing to see that white privilege and fragility pervaded the conversation. The story that followed reflects the path that most of our institutions have followed, being built on the framework and existing as a legacy of white supremacy. It reflects the way systems have always failed BIPOC communities; while prioritizing the fear of the majority.

We need to center BIPOC youth and create an environment they can see themselves lead and grow in. What is cultivating a community if we do not start with our youngest community members? I’m hoping this election can give Portland a new path to draw, a path that can represent Portland’s present and future, a path that ensures that Portland stands for all of us and not just a few. It is time to plant the future and create space for a young and diverse future for Portland.

Below is an autobiography written by a 17 year old me in my Art of Writing class. Other than growth and aging, not much has changed. I still love to camp and hike but I’ve definitely stopped participating in expeditions!. I have been very fortunate to add a couple more adventurous places to my travel bucket list. I went back home in 2017 with my mom and I’ve recently traveled to Thailand, Australia, Chile, Canada and many U.S states.

Happy Independence Day to my home and the youngest country in the world, South Sudan. I was born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, then moved to the U.S. when I was 8. I have never known my home country, but the pride and culture will never leave me. We have experienced many atrocities throughout gaining and maintaining our freedom but our resilience and strength will surely bring us peace.

With love and Solidarity,

Nyalat For School Board At-Large

Thank you Ange Ishimwe for endorsing me! This campaign is fundamentally about bring a voice for BIPOC youth in our school system into the decision making process, and working my best to create a safer, more equitable environment for youth with marginalized identities.

I am honored to be endorsed by Ange, a leader of the Portland High School Black Student Union. I am also honored to have had the opportunity to meet with her and Black youth leaders from all 3 of Portland's public high schools, to hear their concerns and find ways to support them in my position.

If you haven't voted yet, I ask that you vote for me tomorrow and support the most progressive candidates running to represent you.

I am grateful to have the endorsement of Lisa Savage, a progressive, independent candidate for U.S. Senate. Like Lisa, I am concerned with addressing the problems youth face in our education system at their roots.

I am honored to have received the endorsement of Shay Stewart-Bouley, the founder of Black Girl in Maine, a blog with social commentary from the perspective of a Black woman in the whitest state in the US. She is a committed advocate, and has done fantastic work focused on equipping people, who are less familiar with conversations around racism, with the necessary tools to effectively combat racism in their communities. Shay, your endorsement is meaningful and, if elected, I promise to make good on the trust you have invested in me as a candidate.

Follow her at () to keep up with her work.

Stay tuned for our upcoming events and announcements!

City of Portland, Maine Public Schools Superintendent Xavier Botana has issued the following statement in support of Deering High School co-principals for a recent message they shared with the DHS community: "I stand by Deering High School co-principals. They have a 1st Amendment right, they are taking a clear stand on behalf of Black Lives, because it matters and they are reflecting our commitment to Equity. Couldn’t be prouder of these leaders."
