⭐CONGRATS! Karen Mazzola and her team at Helmer Nature Center are West Irondequoit's Act For Education Community Champion Award winner. Mrs. Mazzola and HNC were honored at Friday’s annual breakfast at the Kodak Center. Karen has worked at Helmer for 23 years, including the last 16 as its Director. Before that, she was the HNC Events Coordinator.
HNC is unique. Our 45-acre “outdoor classroom” is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In 1973, under the leadership of then-Superintendent Earle W. Helmer, the West Irondequoit CSD Board of Education set aside this land within West Irondequoit to be preserved as an environmental study area.
School field trips are part of the WICSD science curriculum. HNC is a place where students learn about the environment, wildlife and their habitat. HNC has several easy-to-hike trails and plenty of space for snow shoeing in the winter. Out-of-district clubs, such as the Boys Scouts, utilize HNC. It also brings the community together with annual events. HNC just recently pulled off its biggest ever - "Eclipse Fest: Together in Totality," on April 8th. In the middle of it all, using her wealth of experience and tireless work ethic, is Mrs. Mazzola.
“I love the site and the school district is so supportive,” Mrs. Mazzola said. “My colleagues have been just wonderful! The history of the place and bringing our students here is amazing.”
HNC’s mission: To utilize the natural world as a classroom in order to provide practical, integrated learning opportunities, foster environmental awareness and promote the concept of global stewardship, for life-long learners. From dawn to dusk, there are regular and occasional hikers – families and individuals – who journey to HNC to simply enjoy a walk in the woods. Over the course of the school year, HNC hosts annual events such as its Fall Harvest Celebration in October, Trim-A-Tree for Wildlife in December, Trees-for-Trails in early January, Maple Weekend in March and Bloomin’ Baskets in May (this year’s event is Thursday, May 9).
She is a lifelong resident and 1980 Irondequoit HS graduate. Her husband, Marc, accompanied her to Friday’s event. Mrs. Mazzola’s mother, Darlene Morgan, formerly worked in Accounts Payable for the WICSD. Five generations of Morgans have livedi Irondequoit. HNC is actually Mrs. Mazzola’s second career; she was a real estate appraiser for 20 years. Now, she oversees some of the most amazing real estate in West Irondequoit. Our schools, children and community are better because of you, Mrs. Mazzola! Congratulations, Mrs. Mazzola!
