LULAC Selects Civil Rights Leader
OMAHA, NE – Ms. Tonya Ward has been named President of the LULAC of Omaha Justice Council #35006 by League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). The selection, by the CEO of the national organization, Ms. Sindy Benavides, and based on
Ms. Ward’s 30-year commitment to equality and fairness as well as her demonstrated advocacy skills that she employs assisting those with needs others in authority ignore. The formation of the Omaha Justice Council was mentored by Mr. Joe Henry, member National Executive Committee LULAC of Iowa.
With approximately 132,000 members and supporters, LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health, and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs through more than 1,000 LULAC councils nationwide serving all Hispanic nationality groups. https://lulac.org/about/
Nebraska now has 2 LULAC Councils. LULAC Nebraska in Lincoln, NE, the President, Ms. Elsa R Aranda, will continue to bond with Ms. Ward and her members as this new Council begins to work with other leaders that bring our brown, black and white communities together in the common struggle for civil rights, justice, better laws and improvements in conditions that negatively impact people living in the Omaha area, throughout Nebraska and Iowa.
A four-year member of LULAC, Ms. Ward is President of Energy Rescue, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 organization that assists individuals and families who have lost utility services or are threatened with loss. Ms. Ward advocates for fair, reasonable and attainable payment arrangements – instead of shut offs for utility customers of Nebraska.
Ms. Ward is also an elected member of the Learning Community Coordinating Council of Douglas & Sarpy Counties, representing segments of north and south Omaha as well as residents of Washington and Sarpy Counties since 2014. As a Council member, she endeavors to inform the public how the organization spends over $10 million dollars collected from property taxes each year.
Over her years of public advocacy, Ms. Ward has influenced legal reforms in truancy laws, guardian ad litems, utility practices and regulations, homelessness, and reuniting families.
When asked about her selection, Ms. Ward stated, "Living in the heart of South Omaha has deepened my appreciation for Hispanic culture and my own Hispanic heritage. My mother has deep family roots in the West Indies and our south-of-the-border traditions and values have a richness I hope I can share with a wider community improving quality of life for those in need. So much of our history and contributions have been lost. I am honored LULAC has given me the opportunity to represent them in Nebraska and I hope we can advance the LULAC goals by working together with others who share them."

Hello flock! Let us take a moment to introduce ourselves. We are friends and fellow unschool homeschool mamas Tonya Ward and Amanda Devine.
Tonya lives in Omaha. She has been homeschooling for years and has 3 sons 15, 20, and 25. Amanda is new to homeschooling and has a 5 year old son and lives in Council Bluffs. We both veer towards the unschooling approach and focus a lot on outdoor learning.
We have found it difficult to find other homeschool families to get together with. After feeling judged when attending other group meet ups we decided to start a group of our own. We want everyone to feel welcome. We spread kindness and acceptance to all. We want to help support other unschool / homeschool families. So excited to meet new people and see where this learning journey takes everyone. ✌️❤️ 🌎
This sounds like a great opportunity for younger kids. My (Amanda) 5 year old will be attending. Contact Mighty Fork Farms with any questions. Hope to see you at the farm. 🚜🌾
We are looking for kind, accepting parents who are also unschooling or homeschooling their children to meet up, explore nature and share ideas with each other.
