Esther wrote each short story so beautifully, describing each character so well. My heart felt so warm and so full, each character, each vecino, knowing each other & being connected with each other. Aveces necesitas las personas que estΓ‘n cercas de ti, as theyβre the ones that are always around. I kept wondering, I kept asking, why is this book called Stories of Gabriel, quien es Gabriel?
But then I realized that these stories were of loses. Elli, Jorge, Matty, Eva, Marco all lost a baby. Lorenzo lost his baby & Pedro lost a friend, his youth, his neighborhood. They all lost something, leaving a hole in their heart, a void that couldnβt be filled. It was so bittersweet having Pedro return to the block years later, bringing back the memories. It felt sad. But it also felt like each personβs heart was whole again. Sometimes we have to lose things, people, places to become complete & full again - with the help & love of those around us.
I wanted so so much more from each story, I couldnβt put it down until I saw & red everyoneβs perspective. I canβt wait for more of Estherβs writing! thank you so much for giving me an e-copy of this amazing book. π
Book friends - I know we all love the most recently released & popular books, but letβs give some love to this Black Latina author for the amazing writing she has given to us all!

Esther Alix's Stories of Gabriel - Urban Latino Haunting and intricate, 'Stories of Gabriel' isn't just any love story, but merely a peak into several interconnected characters, with loves lost or found, new or lasting. All taking place within a few street corners of each other, the vibrant Latino Caribbean culture of a 1990's Bronx neighborhood....

Qotd: Where do you find your books to read?
The third book I finished in March was Stories of Gabriel by Esther Alix (). It was a collection of short stories that was hard to put down.
I picked up the book because is having a book club event at the end of this month. I can't go to the virtual event because of a prior engagement, but I still wanted to read the book. The book was short, under 150 pages, and that was exactly what I wanted. I wanted something shorter that I could read while also reading larger books. It was great and honestly hard to put down.Β being an E-book made it so I could read it at any time thanks to my Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle app on my phone.
The stories were all related which was amazing. I loved being able to get all the different perspectives and different time frames. At first I thought it would be jarring, but the transitions were smooth. I loved being able to see different parts of Dominican culture shine. There were many references to various foods which I always enjoy. Really makes me want to figure out ways to incorporate food into my writing more.
β¨Book Reviewβ¨
πβEsther has written a beautifully and carefully considered book with complex characters whose stories and lives are deeply interconnected. The stories envelop your senses and you really feel the sense of community the stories weave. loved the vivid storytelling and felt like I could connect with many of the characters and scenes. "Stories of
Gabriel" will tug at your heart and keep you reading until the last story! Loved this book and can't wait to share it with more readers.βπ
To quote my friend , βI went outside.β
β¨Book Review Love β¨
π βBeautiful story about the waves of loss and love that can ripple throughout a community of color. I loved that the book starts off with those on the periphery of the incident and slowly zooms in. The characters were deep and I wanted to continue to follow them post the ending. Maybe there will be a second book?β
