My reflection on opting for JKBOSE textbooks

Education is defined as the modification of behaviour, keeping the desire of society into consideration. Behaviour consists of three domains-Cognitive domain ( thinking), Conative domain (doing),affective domain(feelings).To bring a desirable change in these three domains, a society frames its own mechanism. Hence, education system of a country comes into existence.
Education must have four constituent parts. These are: aim,curriculum,means and a teacher.
Aim is defined as a foreseen end which gives direction to our activity and motivates our behaviour.
It means , runway, activity,method and a person are decided by an aim itself to get itself achieved .Keeping the aim into consideration, runway(road) is designed to reach it.This runway (road) is called Curriculum. Curriculum is the combination of Curricular and Co- Curricular activities. Curricular activities are those activities which are carried out inside the class room to achieve the goal(aim).On the other hand, Co- Curricular activities are those are those activities which are carried out out- side the classroom to add something to the Curricular activities. They are supplementary in nature.
To run on the runway, there should be some means.These are textbooks,maxims, audio- visual aids, methodology etc.And there should be a guide,a director who will steer the boat or who will provide guidance. This guide or director is a teacher.Hence, teacher is defined as a guide and director who steers the boat but the energy that propels it must come from those who are learning.
Now, let us come on the decision of JKBOSE officials.By issuing an order , JKBOSE officials have made it mandatory for private schools to use JKBOSE textbooks from class 1st to class 10th.
Let us go for its critical
evaluation.
To set the curriculum is the duty of society for achieving the aim of education .In contemporary era,this decision is taken by an executive on behalf of society for its welfare, especially in a democratic setup. Here, a question arises, what should curriculum consist of? As defined earlier, the curriculum consists of two constituent parts- Curricular and co-Curricular activities.Curricular activities include subjects and contents taught inside classroom. To decide these subjects and contents,taught inside classroom, is the duty of an executive. In simple words, to choose the subjects and contents is the duty of an executive.
Here, again a question is raised.Is it not the duty of an executive to select textbooks?Textbook is simply a means like methods or maxims of teaching in the hands of a teacher. Let me use an illustration to make you understand. Suppose, science subject has been chosen for 5th standard and the contents to be taught have been chosen as photosynthesis, evaporation, living and non- Living things etc.To cover these contents, different books may come into existence. It is the teacher's choice to choose a textbook to make his/ her students capable enough to reach the goal.As the audio- visual aids, methods and maxims of teaching are chosen by a teacher so are the textbooks. An executive can not choose one vehicle to run on the road. This is the task of a guide to decide for making his students capable enough to run on the road.

How Pheran came to Kashmir...

Noted Historian G.M.D. Sofi has mentioned that when Mughal Emperor Akbar for the first time visited the valley, he was briefed by his governor about the courageous and fearless nature of Kashmiris. Therefore, in a bid to crush this rebellious spirit, Akbar passed strict directions to alter people's dress code. Earlier, people here used to put on their traditional clothing—something similar to what people in central Asia would wear. Akbar compelled Kashmiris to don Pheran (a loose baggy rag) and made them habitual of using Kangiri (fire pots). Such underhanded means were aimed at making them sluggish and crushing their courageous spirit.
During the early times, Kangiri was called Rangiri by the people of Kashmir. A western historian, Lt. Newyal, has mentioned that such measures taken by Akbar were to suppress the fearless character and militant spirit of the people of Kashmir.

NASA astrobiologists travel to the Atacama to look for microorganisms that live in such an extreme environment, hoping to learn how life might exist on other planets.
