Suzanne Supplee – author and educator New Year, New Books! January 8, 2020 by Suzanne Supplee So many books, but not nearly enough time! Every year I set big goals for reading, and every year I fall short of said goal. In 2019, I read 38 books, and it’s very tempting to fudge here and say I read 40. There are two nearly finished books...

I love this woman's work. I've read all of it. Her places, her people are so rich and real. And, she is only 75, so I'm hoping for 25 more years of books. ❤️

Attention Please, Anne Tyler Has Something to Say She’s not a recluse — or, as one critic called her, the Greta Garbo of the literary world — but she avoids interviews. So why is she doing one now?

On a dreary Monday morning, I discovered this gem in my stack of senior papers. ❤️

Photos from Suzanne Supplee's post 02/10/2017

This morning when my alarm sounded, I switched it off and saw a text from my oldest daughter: "I AM OKAY. I want you to see this text before you see the news." Oldest daughter lives in California, and I envisioned earthquakes and nuclear missiles. Then, I remembered she'd gone to Vegas with her graduate school girlfriends for the weekend. They are smart and beautiful and accomplished and loving and kind. They are her people. They are real friends, the ones who show up in good times and in bad. In horror I watched the footage and choked down some toast. I got ready for work and drove to school. She is okay, I kept reminding myself, all the while thinking of those countless people who would not get that text: I AM OKAY.

Cassie is okay, but this is not okay. Gun violence in our country is out of control. The vitriol is out of control. We can do better. We must do better. Too many of us know firsthand the effects of gun violence. I lost a father. No more.

Wear orange!

On Christmas Eve in 1969, I lost my father to gun violence. To say this tragedy touched my life deeply would be a gross understatement. His death changed everything about me—my view of the world, my relationships with friends and loved ones, and my outlook on life. On June 2nd I plan to wear orange in memory of my father.

If you are a gun owner, please make sure you follow the guidelines for safe storage.

Preventing Child Access to Guns and Promoting Responsible Gun Culture - Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America The recent Associated Press/USA Today series on unintentional shootings by children raises important questions about the gun culture we have in America—especially as it relates to how children are affected by easy access to loaded fi****ms. From this week's issue:

"I know a writer who wakes up before 5 a.m. nearly every day to write.

She has to get up so early because she also leads a high school literary arts program, where she guides seniors through the process of writing and publishing their books—some of which have gone on to win big awards. This writer has published three novels and raised three daughters. (Her middle child is named after her favorite author, Flannery O'Connor.)

She's my writing idol. She's also my mother."

Happy Mother's Day to my mom, Suzanne Supplee, and to all moms. ❤️

When you find this waiting in your mailbox...
I am M, a high school senior from ... I recently read your book after a friend highly recommended it and then let me borrow it. During the school year i don't get a chance to read as much as i would like to, but I fell in love with your book. I felt like finally there was someone like me in a book. I've grown up not being the size I would like to be, let's just say that. I also went through a difficult experience when my mom was very ill a couple years ago. Rosemary's life eerily mirrored my life and I felt understood. It has become my most treasured book and I was almost tempted to underline my favorite passages! Your book has a very special place in my heart and i wanted to thank you for writing the book. As I seek a career as a writer and in English. I hope to capture someone's attention and adoration as you did with Artichoke's Heart.

A little bit of reader love goes a LONG way! Happy to find this in my pile of emails yesterday, and grateful to the all-grown-up-now reader who sent it.

Mrs.Supplee,
My younger brother Conor just graduated and had a couple of friends in your Lit class over last night at our house. Daniel was among the visitors and happened to notice the “Students Across the Seven Seas” book series on our bookshelf that I read when I was younger. My mother and I were so excited to hear that you wrote our favorite book in the whole series, “When Irish Guys are Smiling”.

That series played a huge part igniting my travel bug and I ended up studying abroad in Dublin last summer through the University of Notre Dame. Books can have a huge impact on our lives and I'd like to thank you for the impact your book had on my life.
