Indigenous Male Genius

Three Maori brother-in-laws all in different walks of life with varied up bringing that have shaped our individual personalities and who we are. Often for many years now (like most in-laws) we sit and share issues, problems and challenges of the day. One thing that has always
been amazing is that no matter ones vocabulary or of varying degrees of frustration towards a problem the shared korero or talk just seems to click with each other. Although we are talking perfect or in some cases imperfect English there is a parallel language being spoken, a tone, a feeling even a cry at times that is not heard physically not even spiritually rather an unspoken wifi like connection that is instantly understood by each other. A language that is often transferable and spoken among other male folk, again with instant interpretation and understanding.

lets contextualize this a little more, a simple example is when two brothers haven't seen each other for sometime, yes the obvious happens there is a greeting of some sort maybe a hug and tears. But if you were to pay special attention and observe closer there is more to it. Often there is a silent nod after the hug or a slight smug of the cheek that’s close to a smile. The head sometimes sways side to side and in some instances an out of place “yeh nah” rolls of the tip of the tongue. Sounds such as “fheeew”, “wiiiii”, “geeesh” covers the emotions, even short sharp profanity such as “sh*t”, “bloody hell” can be herd, often these all followed by a deep excreting breath from the deep inner diaphragm.

Another example; In most of our whanau we all have that one male relative (Brother, dad, uncle, papa) whom is one of very few words. That same relative who does all his talking through his actions with his physicality always around to support kaupapa or events. These are those very few whom we know we can rely on time after time. When the rare occasions do come around albeit at a birthday, wedding or funeral and these relatives do stand to speak even though the words are limited, what little is spoken tends to brings comfort, security and warmth to ones soul. Again if we observe closer we see the instant when uncle, dad or papa stands often the first thing we hear are the sighs of different sound around the room such as “awww”, “iimmm” there are heartfelt words of encouragement like “kia ora dad”, “nice one uncle”, “love you papa” some times because of the lack of words spoken by these type we find our selves's filling the gaps of intended words and sentiments in our own minds. It is these very examples that highlights to us an untapped, unexplored indigenous native male language. The power of pure intention, whakapapa and intuition converge to create that unspoken language or what should be unreservedly called out as an Indigenous Native Male Genius or what we have coined as “Indi_ Genius Minds”.

It is the combination of these small observations that lead towards the belief of an Indigenous Native Male Genius (language if we may call it) which calls for better understanding. Although language is not the only thing that will constitute Indigenous Native Male Genius if we are to believe in a future that is authentic and Indigenous lead then surly this is a great place to start by empowering and understanding indigenous males better.
