Succombs Hill

I saw the posts last night about the lorry stuck on Succombs Hill again and wanted to share with you a plan I have been persistently working on with highways officers over the last year to tackle this.

Firstly I believe the signage is not adequate to tell drivers of wide vehicles that this road is not suitable. Although the signs there are the legally enforceable signs I think they need to be bolder and also to spell it out to drivers. I have arranged for new signage, top and bottom, that will be on yellow back boards and form a ‘gateway’ so that drivers have to take note. I’d also like it to specifically say ‘not suitable for HGVs’ or similar, I’m working on that but it needs approval from further up the government chain. The new signs will be installed in the new financial year (April/May).

Secondly I mentioned that the width restriction signs are enforceable, however the police who are the enforcement body do not attend. Enforcement of width and weight on roads is an issue across the county so the Cabinet members for Highways and Community Protection, which includes Trading Standards have sought the power to take this enforcement into the County Council highways team. So enforcement will take place across the county from April, with ramifications of fines, etc. I talk to Matt Furnis, cabinet member for highways, frequently about Succombs Hill; all this action has been enabled with his support and he is extremely aware of our issues with this hill so we will see officers here.

I believe with better signage and enforcement action we will be able to eradicate the bulk of the HGV problems we have on Succombs Hill.
