Being an attentive student of our game is something I take great pride in and to this day I do my best to learn from the great players before my era. Ben Hogan was the one I wanted knowledge from the most. He knew the swing better than anyone. GP

-HOGANS UNIQUE GRIPS-
Ben Hogan famously used cord grips with a reminder wire set at 5 O’clock to encourage a weaker grip position, one of his many “SECRETS”
But did you know of Ben Hogans connection to the original cord grip inventor?
Jack Burke( father of Jackie Burke)invented the all-weather grip for golf clubs. The grip was a rubber grip with cotton cord running through it. Apparently he came up with the idea when he seen the inside of a burst car tyre.
Burke had a patent on the idea and sold the grips through the Burke Par Company as the Burke Grip.It was said that Ben Hogan and some of his tour friends had shares in the original company but that the patent was lost because it wasn’t renewed during the war years. Ben favoured the cord grips because the standard leather grips could get quite slippery in the varying weather conditions. The grips were also considerably longer to allow greater versatility In shotmaking.
I’m posting a link in my bio from where Steve and Mike check out his grips at the Ben Hogan Museum in Dublin Texas.
-HOGAN TIP-
Well Mr Hogan have you got any tip for the discerning British golfer?
“BREATH, breath in on your backswing and out on your downswing, it’s what I do, it really helps my timing.”-Ben Hogan after a practice round for the Open at Carnoustie in 1953.
Ben Hogan was certainly feeling the pressure on the run into the Open, adopting to the small British ball the difficult terrain and changeable weather that an Open venue throws at you and not to mention the historical significance of winning the years third major.. it’s a wonder he could breath at all!
“I felt a pressure there to win like I’ve never experienced before, I felt I simply had to win.”- Ben Hogan (1983)
-PATH TO SUCCESS-
Whilst conducting a clinic in Nashville in the early fifties Ben Hogan was questioned by an avid local golfer about the much vaunted Hogan fade.
You seem to fade every shot, why.
“On courses I don’t know or in difficult situations hit the shots you can best control, I can control a fade I’m not afraid of getting into any difficulty when I hit the fade.”
Do you get that cut from coming from outside the line?
“No, absolutely not, I never go outside the line.”
How do you do it so?
“That is something I do not tell, I will never tell.”
“If you hit enough shots you will figure out everything you need to know about the golf swing.”-Ben Hogan.

-NOT FOR SHOW-
An opinion that’s probably at odds with what a lot of golfers believe but an interesting perspective none the less. Can’t argue with his success on difficult golf courses.
-MASTERS SUNDAY-
70 years ago Ben Hogan was laying down a marker for the season ahead with a dominant performance on Masters Sunday.
How cool is that.. U.S. Open Championship Masters Tournament The Open
Ben Hogan's "Triple Crown" year, 1953.
His U.S. Open, Masters and Open championship medals are now in the USGA Museum.
-TRIPLE CROWN-
Seventy years ago, Ben Hogan won all five official PGA Tour events he entered, including all three of the Grand Slam tournaments, 1953 will stand out as perhaps the greatest season a professional golfer has ever had and Ben Hogan is still the only golfer to have won Masters Tournament the U.S Open and The Open in the same year.
Ben Hogans dominant performance in the first major of the year was a prelude of what was to come in that historic season.
When the tournament was over Ben had set a new scoring record for the tournament beating the previous record by five.
“This was the best I’ve played at Augusta.”
Such was his ball-striking that week that it was said Hogan was “knocking the flagsticks down.” Following his 22 birdies for the week Bobby Jones would say” I never thought anyone could put on such an exhibition.”
Thanks to James Weston for providing me with these wonderful rare images from his collection of Ben Hogan at the 1953 Masters. ENJOY!
-HOGAN THE MASTER-
Did you know?
Ben Hogan played in The Masters Tournament 25 times. He won twice, finished second four times, had nine Top 5s, and 17 out of those 25 Masters he finished in the Top 10. That included the last one he played.
Thanks to James Weston for allowing me to share some rare photos from his collection of Ben Hogan competing at the 1953 Masters Tournament , Which I will share with you over the coming week.
-LEFT SIDE-
“I got onto my left side as much as anyone, so much of golf is dependent on the left side.”-Ben Hogan.(1975)
-SYMPHONY OF MOVEMENT-
Ben Hogan never got static over the ball and moved so seamlessly from the waggle to the backswing.
“The waggle gives a golfer a running start.”-Ben Hogan.

-WORLD BOOK DAY-
Ben Hogan’s best selling instructional book The Modern Fundamentals of Golf has helped thousands of golfers improve their swing and enjoyment of the game. First published in 1957 it has sold over 1 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 languages. A timeless classic, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons outlines the building blocks of winning golf from one of the all-time masters of the sport. Fully illustrated with wonderful drawings and diagrams by Anthony Ravielli.
Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break eighty if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step by step, and stroke by stroke. In each chapter, a different experience-tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin.
“You simply cannot bypass the fundamentals of golf.”-Ben Hogan.
-PERFECT-
What was Hogan’s secret?
“His body action. He had a better engine than anyone else. He was perfect.”-Pete Cowen(Golf Digest Australia)
-CONSISTENCY KEY-
“I found to my enormous relief that, if I swung back along this plane, my club would, in effect, be traveling up a set slot throughout my backswing, on swing after swing. If it did that, at the top of the backswing plane it was bound to hit the end of this set slot, on swing after swing, thus eliminating my inconsistency.”

-GOLF LESSON FROM BEN HOGAN-
Just imagine having the opportunity to sit and listen while Ben Hogan demonstrated how he swung a golf club, years of hard graft gave him an unsurpassed knowledge of what he felt were the true fundamental movements on an efficient and reliable golf swing.
Nothing was left to chance in his quest to control the golf ball and a lot of Hogan’s discoveries are still widely discussed and taught in the modern game.
“In the era when controlling the golf ball was key, Ben Hogan outclassed everyone by 10 miles.”-Jack Nicklaus.
-REMARKABLE IN 53-
When Ben Hogan won the 1953 Masters by 5 and set a new tournament record, he hadn’t played in an official tournament since the previous years U.S Open,a full 10 months, post accident Ben played in significantly fewer events but was always honing his game and was ready when it came time to play.
“ if Hogan turns up to play, one things for sure, you know he’s ready.”-Sam Snead.
“If you prepare properly the end result almost becomes an anti-climax.”-Ben Hogan.

-ELASTIC ENERGY-
“The body should feel in balance both laterally and back-to-front. You should feel a sense of heaviness in your buttocks. There should be more tension in your legs from the knees down—the lower part of your legs should feel very springy and strong, loaded with elastic energy.”-Ben Hogan.
-CHAMELEON-
Ben Hogan made numerous changes to his golf swing over the years, all in effort to gain even greater control of the golf ball.Nobody has done it better.
“Golf is a game of constant change and adjustment.”-Ben Hogan
The attached clips are approximately 15 years apart, how many changes can you see?
⛳
-BUNKERED-
Great view of Ben Hogan extricating himself from a buried lie in a bunker.
In the Hogan era bunkers were very penalising, not well maintained with inconsistent texture.
Players had limited equipment options and creativity was a must.
Ben was more recognised as a good bunker player than a great one, then again he probably visited them less frequently than his peers.
-COLOSSAL AT CARNOUSTIE-
By winning the Ben Hogan remains the only golfer to have won the and in the same calendar year. 🐐
-THE MOVE-
“The right elbow returns to the side of the body almost as soon as the downswing gets underway”.-Ben Hogan (POWER GOLF)
Harvey Penick referred to this as THE MAGIC MOVE when done in conjunction with moving your weight to the left to start the downswing, Ben Hogan had a myriad of magic moves of which this was just one.
-MASTERY TAKES TIME-
Great 35MM of 58 year old Ben Hogan, he still had great speed and athleticism even though the injuries from the accident were starting to take their toll on him, particularly his left knee which had become increasingly more painful.Ben lamented not being able to get onto his left side as much as he used to, ”i probably got onto my left side as much as anybody.”
The left foot stability that George Knudson referenced in his book(The Natural Golf Swing)is more noticeable in the older Ben Hogan, with less rear foot slide. The backswing appears shorter even though I have footage of Ben in his 70’s getting to parallel and beyond..🤔 hard to tell from the footage, possibly windy and just controlling the trajectory, either way, nobody did it better than Ben Hogan, the consummate shot maker.
-Watch on repeat and hope it's contagious!
-HOGAN TIP-
“As I see it most high handicap golfers seem to make these 2 errors in their swing, on their backswing they let their left knee shoot straight out instead of working back towards the right, this poor footwork causes them to tilt and lose balance. They also allow their arms/elbows to separate too much throughout the swing”-Ben Hogan.(1943)
-PLATINUM-
2023 marks the 70th Anniversary of THE HOGAN SLAM.
Ben Hogan remains the only golfer to have won and The Open] in the same calendar year.
Remarkably he won the British Open on his first and only visit and was unable to compete in that year's because it clashed with the playing of the The Open] that year, by winning the Open Ben completed the career Grand Slam and is one of only five golfers to have done so.
-THE EXTRA SPIKE-
Ben Hogan famously had extra spikes added to his golf shoes, which he had custom made. Ben felt this was a critically important element and wrote the following in his first instructional book - Power Golf.
“When playing a tee shot, a fairway wood or long iron shot I get a little something extra into them by the manner in which I utilise my right foot. Some say that I dig my right toe in when hitting a tee shot, but that description isn’t correct because it isn’t my toe I dig into the ground. At address for the above mentioned shots I dig in with the cleats on the inside edge of the sole of the right shoe. This gives me a feeling of solidity to hit from and as a result I get more distance by getting a little shove with my right foot as the club approaches the ball.”-Ben Hogan.
-MAN OR MACHINE-
Ben Hogan’s golf swing was once described as similar to a machine stamping out bottle caps. The Hogan name is synonymous with near perfect control of distance and direction, he will always be the benchmark against which shot -makers are measured.
“HIT IT LIKE HOGAN”
⛳️
-COPING TIP FROM BEN HOGAN-
On one occasion after Ben Hogan hit a less-than-perfect shot, he momentarily furrowed his brow in a sign of displeasure. When he regained composure, he told John Schlee of an important technique he’d developed to deal with disappointment. Hogan described how he walked the golf course imagining an enormous impenetrable wall following right behind him. This wall extended to either side as far as the eye could see and from the earth up into the heavens. The wall moved with his every step and blocked his view of everything that had occurred before the present moment. Once the shot is played, it becomes history, never to be changed. -Excerpts from (The Secret of Ben Hogan's Swing): by Tom Bertrand.
“Golf is a game of misses, the one who misses best will win”-Ben Hogan.
