Thanks for the write-up, Princeton Public Schools, New Jersey!: "We were thrilled to be able to participate," said Acting Superintendent Kathie Foster, who was one of the volunteers. "Itβs a phenomenal program and I look forward to our continued partnership."
Volunteers included PRESSA union members Valerie Henry, Olive Giles, and Danella Vecchio. "We put the 'support' in Support Staff for our students and families," said Ms. Giles, secretary for the Child Study Team and Guidance Department at Princeton High School.
Rick Miller, a social studies teacher at Princeton High School, and students from the PHS Food Aid Group were also among the many volunteers, as was Jen Bigioni, Educational Media Specialist at the high school. Both Mr. Miller and Ms. Bigioni are members of PREA, the teachers' union.
"The pantry is an incredibly organized, energizing undertaking," Ms. Bigioni said. "It's easy to learn what you need to do, and all help is truly appreciated. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, so we were able to do in about an hour what often takes two. It's also wonderful being able to so directly help the community we already serve in other ways."
PMFP helps the 7 percent of the Princeton population who are food insecure. According to data compiled by the pantry, the number of families requiring help is increasing each week.

Today, Princeton Regional Educational Support Staff Association joined with our PREA (teachers) and PAA (Admin) colleagues to assist the Princeton Mobile Food Pantry pack food for those who are in need in our community. Thanks to Malachi Wood (French Teacher /PHS) for organizing and inviting us, the school support staff members, to this NJEA PRIDE event. Joining NJEA grant coordinator, is 2nd left Valerie Henry (PHS Sect.), Liliana Clotilde Morenilla (Bilingual Parent Liaison-School & Municipality of Princeton) and Danella Vecchio (Princeton Middle School Sect.)
From Mandy Arshan, our Volunteer Director, "It was great to have representatives from the three Princeton education unions (PAA, PREA, PRESSA) and administrators at the Pantry, and their generous donations will help us to continue to serve the community they so graciously serve every day. We also loved having the PHS students from the Food Aid group to the Pantry, as well as getting an opportunity to educate them on what the PMFP does and how we do it. I hope they get a sense for what an amazing community they are a part of and continue the good work!"
Many thanks to Faherty Brand, their Princeton team, and Triumph Brewing Company of Princeton for a wonderful fundraising event. We raised nearly $1,000, which will support our biweekly deliveries of fresh, culturally relevant groceries to our neighbors. Missed the event but want to donate? About us!
The Princeton Mobile Food Pantry is a grassroots organization that has operated in various forms since 2010. In 2017, we established a partnership with Mercer Street Friends Food Bank and offered a weekly pickup for over 300 people at the Henry Pannell Learning Center. Under COVID-19, we became independent and mobile, changed our name to the Princeton Mobile Food Pantry, and shifted to biweekly deliveries of fresh groceries to over 500 food-insecure people. Our primary focus is on families with children in Princeton Public Schools, all of whom range in age, race, identity, background, and mobility. A volunteer-led collective, we support our neighbors through various networks and collaboration with community partners.
