The League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area will hold a candidates’ debate for the three open seats on the Cooperstown Central School District Board of Education on Monday, May 13. The event will be held at the Cooperstown Central School Jr./Sr. High School cafeteria at 7 p.m. There are six candidates running school board: Padraic MacLeish, Matthew Monahan, Mary Beth Murdock, Keith Parr, Anthony Scalici, and William Streck. Monahan and Scalici are incumbents.
Maureen Murray, a member of the Cooperstown Area League, will moderate the event. The school board elections are non-partisan; candidates do not run as members of a party.
On Election Day, May 21, voters will also vote on the 2024-2025 district budget. The budget for 2024-2025 is available on the district web site (https://www.cooperstowncs.org/documents/budget/2024-2024-budget-documents/610257)
The election will be held at the Cooperstown High School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Any citizen, 18 years of age or older who has been a resident of the district for 30 days preceding the election is qualified to vote. Absentee ballots are available at the district office (contact Maria Field at 547-5364).

League members will be registering voters from noon to 6 at The Village Library of Cooperstown, The Cherry Valley Bookstore, and the Grand Union in Hartwick Seminary. If you've moved or changed your name or want to enroll in a party, League members will help with that as well. If you are on Oneonta, the LWV of Oneonta will be at Hartwick College Dewar Union, from11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and SUNY Oneonta International from Lounge, noon-6 p.m.

Monday’s tragedy unfolded as our state legislature is poised to weaken gun safety laws. Our elected leaders must do more to protect our communities from the dangers of gun violence and to keep our students safe.

While we wait for the votes to be counted, the League wants the public to know that our elections are safe and secure. An accurate ballot count is more important than a fast ballot count.

Today is the last day for early voting in New York. Early Voting is open at the Otsego County Board of Elections, Meadows Office Complex,140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown and the Foothills Performing Arts Center, 24 Market St., Oneonta from 9 am-5pm
PRIMARY ELECTION DAY is almost here. The last day for voters to enroll in a party or change their registration is August 11. Early voting for the election runs August 13-21. There are two early voting sites in Otsego County, the Foothills Performing Arts Center and the Meadows Office Complex. The League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area has added a Q&A about the election to its website (LWVCooperstownArea.org).
Early Voting for the June primary ends on Sunday, June 26. Hours are 9 am - 5 pm, Fri, Jun 24; Sat, Jun 25; and
Sun, Jun 26. at the Meadows Complex in Cooperstown or at the Foothills Center in Oneonta.
