Residents, activists express no confidence in L.A. County’s Aliso Canyon gas leak health study 03/05/2021

Residents, activists express no confidence in L.A. County’s Aliso Canyon gas leak health study The public health department, which is spearheading the study with guidance from a scientific oversight committee, known as SOC, and community advisory group, or CAG, recently released the study’s …

CAG Town Halls - CAG 19/04/2021

The health study CAG will not be holding our weekly mini town hall meeting today, but I wanted to remind you that all feedback for the health study is due by Friday, April 30, by 5pm.
We plan to hold our next meeting on Monday, April 26th at 6pm.
Below is our information about what to write about and where to send the email. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to send us an email at [email protected].
We have all our town hall videos on our website, https://alisohealthstudycag.org/cag_town_halls/. You can watch the video of our presentation to the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSG-QvhRY7I.
From the Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study Community Advisory Group
Here are the CAG’s recommendations for your public comments on the Health Study Goals & Priorities draft document. The CAG unanimously agrees that the loose draft language invites a mediocre study by encouraging the use of data proxies and environmental abstractions. We feel that only a clinically-based health study will result in the Gold Standard Health Study that our community deserves. PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD ENDS FRIDAY APRIL 30 AT 5PM.

HOW to respond
Use email rather than the limited data input form.

WHO to send your comments to
[email protected]

CC the following to maximize impact of your comments:
CAG at [email protected]
Supervisor Kathryn Barger at [email protected]
Councilman John Lee at [email protected]

WHAT to include in your comments
Require research to be clinically focused:
• Require clinical examinations.
• Require long-term clinical monitoring and evaluation.
• Require evaluation of the acute disaster exposures as well as the chronic exposure
before and after the blowout.
• Require evaluation of all chemicals and substances of exposure, including radiation,
crude oil, and particulate matter.

Require transparency of the following flaws in existing data:
• Data based on estimates of known chemical exposure, much is unknown.
• California Council on Science & Technology (CCST) deemed the air monitoring
measurements to be flawed and unusable for a Health Assessment.
• No air monitoring data in the early days of the blowout when release was most intense.
• Air monitoring toxic trigger points were set arbitrarily and well above safety limits.
• Majority of the air monitoring during the blowout was done by SoCalGas.

Require Dept. of Public Health to deliver foundational, scientific data about the exposure chemicals and substances since researchers will not have subpoena authority to compel SoCaGas to provide this data.
• Complete chemical list used in daily operations.
• Complete composition of gas, liquids, and solids from the blowout.
• Complete composition of well-kill elements and quantities.
• Contents of missing evidence bins, including radiation finding.
• Complete CBC Study data and findings.

For the CAG mini hall town hall that further talks about the statement: https://alisohealthstudycag.org/cag_town_halls/ Scroll down to the April 12 town hall.

Again, you have until Friday, April 30th, 5pm to let the Dept of Public Health know that this Goals & Priorities statement is unacceptable and completely ignored what the community wants (a clinically-based – which means looking at us – health study) and not a environmental risk assessment which will be a white wash of what we residents went through because of Aliso.

If you have gotten any symptoms or diagnoses of serious diseases, you need to let DPH know what kind of health study you want.

CAG recommendations for your response to the Goals & Priorities draft document - CAG 13/04/2021

Friday, April 30 at 5pm (extended 2 weeks) is the Department of Public Health's deadline for public comment on the Goals & Priorities draft document. When finalized, this will be the document that researchers who wish to bid on the health study will use to form their proposals.

The Health Study has been a long time coming and this is a pivotal moment for its potential direction. Do you want to know how the exposure to the 2015-2016 Gas Blowout and affected the health of you and your family? Do you want to know if it's safe to live near the gas facility now? Whether or not this health study is relevant requires the involvement of all of us.

Your Community Advisory Group has posted recommendations to help you negotiate the Health Study Goals & Priorities document. It's very important that the health impacts the community is concerned about are part of the study and your CAG wants to ensure that the people who were exposed are studied clinically.

This link to the CAG website includes access to the document and email addresses to send your comments to.

√The next day, Tuesday, July 28, from 10:30am to 12:30 pm, will be a joint meeting of the CAG and the Scientific Oversight Committee. The SOC consists of several experts in the fields of epidemiology and disaster behavior health, among others, that the CAG help push to get on this group alongside representatives from governmental agencies such as the AQMD, CARB, and the California Dept. of Public Health. This SOC will be working on the scope for the study
During this meeting, the CAG will be giving a presentation, including a video, to inform the SOC of what the communities’ issues are concerning the health study.

The public is invited to “attend” this meeting. It will be on Web X, and after the CAG tried it out this last Monday, we found some issues with this platform. Unfortunately this will be the way to access this meeting (but we have asked the County Dept of Public Health to explore alternatives for the upcoming town hall and other meetings. The County has stopped using Zoom).

• Call in information:

+1-415-655-0001

(unfortunately, there’s not a local phone number)

We suggest starting the process to get on the meeting at least 15 minutes before the start time as you may need to load a temporary extension.
√And yes, we have a rescheduled date for the town hall that originally was set last March. It will be on Wednesday, September 30 from 6-8pm.
√The CAG has created a website and we’ll try to post any meeting info, plus other great info.
https://alisohealthstudycag.org/
√The members of the CAG are continuing to press two major issues. The first is the BTEX air monitoring system that was funded by the August 2018 SoCalGas consent decree, but seems to be locked up in some pi***ng contest among the state, county, and city legal entities. The CAG has been corresponding with the parties that are mentioned in the consent decree as well as the lawyers who seem to be holding it up. The PRNC has also been trying to get this project in motion as this system will help us residents know the level of four toxic chemicals in our area (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene).
√The other issue is the comprehensive chemical list of all materials used on the Aliso wells, before and during the blowout, as well as the four years since well SS-25 was sealed. Residents have been asking for this list all along, and the top medical officials at the County Dept. of Public Health have acknowledged that this list is a necessity for a science-based health study. The CAG has found out that the County can subpoena this list, but there’s some reticence on part of Supervisor Barger. We are pressing her (and also asking other elected officials to help with our goal) to agree to have the County issue this subpoena.

√We have also started circulating a petition to show Supervisor Barger that residents want this list. If you haven’t already, please sign it and also let friends and families know about it, even if they don’t live in the north SFV (a health study using this info can help other communities which live near gas or oil facilities understand what could be affecting their health).
Here’s that petition: https://www.change.org/p/los-angeles-county-supervisor-kathryn-barger-obtain-the-full-list-of-chemicals-released-by-socalgas-during-the-aliso-canyon-gas-blowout
√This is the LA County Dept. of Public Health website for the health study: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/eh/healthresearch/
√On the Shut Down Aliso Canyon front, we are working on how to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the blowout. There will be a webinar Topic: Aliso Canyon Webinar - 5YR Anniversary Preview on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7pm PDT.
