Excel Hack #2 - NPV Function
What is Net Present Value?
Net present value (NPV) is used to calculate the current value of a future stream of payments or receipts from a company, project, or investment.
What is Time Value of Money?
A rupee received today is worth more than a rupee received tomorrow because that rupee can be put to earn interest. The value of money depreciates with time keeping in mind the interest and inflation in the economy. This is called the time value of money.
What is Discounting Rate?
Cashflows that are going to be received in the future need to take into account, the time value of money. Hence, a discounting rate is used to bring future cashflows into its present value.
How is XNPV Function different?
Unlike the regular NPV function in Excel which requires only two parameters, (the discount rate and the cashflows), XNPV also takes into account specific dates for cash flows and is, therefore, much more useful and precise.
