The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) warns that va**ng electronic ci******es can be as harmful to gum and oral health as smoking traditional to***co ci******es. Despite the fact that the va**ng phenomenon is relatively new compared to smoking, meaning research details are still incomplete, evidence does show a clear link between e-ci******es and poor gum and oral health.

Unlike to***co smokers, who are more aware of smoking as a risk factor for general health problems and for gum diseases, va**ng users are often misled to think of e-cigs as somehow less harmful or even safe. Va**ng may not be less detrimental to gum and oral health than smoking.

One of the reasons behind va**ng’s unhealthy impact is ni****ne, whether smoked or vaped, which restricts the blood flow to the gums. Other chemicals contained in the e-cig vapour (including formaldehyde, propylene glycol, and benzene) may aggressively increase the damage to the mouth, starting with a progressive destruction of the periodontium, the tissues supporting the teeth.

Unfortunately, the number of va**rs is growing globally at a fast rate. This uptake appears to be higher amongst teenagers, young adults, and people who have never smoked, taking up this potentially damaging habit.

Andreas Stavropoulos, chair of the EFP’s scientific affairs committee and EFP immediate past president, explains, “Damage on the gums and the tissues supporting the teeth, often to an irreversible state, is a likely adverse effect of va**ng.

“This damage includes permanent resorption of the gums and the bone that keep the teeth in function and in the mouth. Treatment of these problems, depending on the extent, is often cumbersome, and expensive.

“For these reasons, at the EFP we urge oral healthcare professionals not to suggest va**ng as a transition strategy of to***co cessation, but rather to prioritise smoking cessation advice for both ci******es and e-ci******es alike and to provide patients with information about the likely detrimental impact of va**ng on gum and oral health.”

I started this case a year ago when my lovely patient came for consultation, him and his lovely partner 💕
It's very strange how you develop a chemistry with your patients and soon their dream become yours too ✨️
We started with mouth clearance we had to take almost all the teeth out cause they were beyond saving, we waited for 6 months to assess the bone and the gum status and then we decided to place four implants in each arch to have an overdenture ( snap on denture ) and here we go after nearly a year my patient had a nice set of teeth which restore function and aesthetic 🦷
I'm not embarrassed to say I get really attached to my patients and I cried when we had the final fit and after the patient left on his final appointment x
