Do you know Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race? BA Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand.

Old man allegedly scamming accommodation seekers finally arrested, several victims emerge.

A syndicate of serial fraudsters led by an old man who for years has been scamming persons searching for accommodation in Accra has finally been arrested.

The syndicate, that posts pictures of rooms and apartments online to court unsuspecting victims, will usually bolt after taking payment and issuing fake receipts.

According to Derek Ofori-Akyea, who helped in the arrest of the ringleader of the syndicate, the fraudsters will usually identify a place and take the victim for a tour after which they demand payment if the renter intends to move in quickly.

Let me share an experience from Friday which may also serve as a caution to many of us who may fall victim to these guys and some others out there.

On Friday a friend asked that I accompany him to pick up an agent who had called him earlier that he’s found an apartment that may interest him. My friend has been actually been looking for a new place.

This agent had earlier sent images of the apartment and the rooms to my friend and quoting an amount as the rent for a full furnished room and unfurnished. Fortunately for my friend on his way to work he came across the same apartment which had infront of it a contact number.

He took the number, thinking, “why go through an agent when I can contact owner directly?” He called the number only to know the amount mentioned to him earlier by the agent wasn’t the same. He tells me he was a bit confused as the gentleman added that, he was the manager and that they had not given out the place to anyone as an agent but all interested persons are to come to them directly.

The manager then mentioned to him that, if he was certain it was the same building as the pictures sent him then he should ask the agent to bring him to the house. He added that there had been similar fraud incident and that he needed to be cautious. This is why my friend called that I accompany him (to have a second person with him).

We picked up the agent and went to the apartment (In fact it was the same place). The manager which he called again before we picked up this agent told my friend, to text him when we get there and that he was also on his way there but won’t be there with his car but with a friend because he wants to know if any of these agents are working with any of his staff at the premises.

At the apartment the agent took us to the fully furnished room where we met another person (an elderly man) who claimed to be the property owner. After taking us round the place and offering us a seat in the hall for further discussions, my friend asked that they excuse us for five mins so we make a quick decision outside. Prior to this, the elderly man had assured us that, we could move in the next morning should he pay asap or in the morning.

It was when we stepped out that we saw two men walk into the compound and one directing the security to lock all the gates asap. Then he mentioned my friends name and he responded, so he knew we were the guys looking for the place to rent.

Fast forward all the drama that took place, these two guys were arrested, the old man actually jumped from the 1st floor to the ground and tried climbing the fence to run but we caught him.

Things we found upon searching and interrogating them as we waited for the owner of the property (who the manger called) and the Ghana police.

1. 3 ID cards (voters, driver license and Ghana card) with the elderly man’s picture bearing three different names.

2. 2 official receipt books, 1 was full ie receipt issued out to people (presumably others who had been scammed) amount ranging between 24k to 50k for rent of apartment (as captured on the receipt). The second book had only 1 leaflet taken out, receipt to one Mr. Antony, an amount of 60k for rent issued on 29th May 2022.

3. Checks from the fake receipt books indicates 51 persons who been victims. They have been successful in bolting with the money of 51 innocent people who just wanted a place to live.

4. A car with fake number plate as a check on the number doesn’t match the car.

5. They confessed to us the car was rented and that they came with taxi too (which had 2 other guys in it) packed infront of the house. So had we handed them the cash they would have issued us a fake receipt, left the rented car and bolted out with the taxi.

6. The fraudsters had actually visited the premises the week before under the pretense of looking for a place to rent and they took pictures of the place.

7. Came back on the Friday under the pretense of taking another look as they wanted to rent the place for some employees of their company and wanted to be sure if we liked it. (So we were the employees)

The owner finally came, the police also arrived and we took these two guys to the police station and wrote our statements.

Be warned! There are lots of guys like these out there, some are old and young and innocent, their looks may just deceive you but be warned when buying or renting. Do proper checks yourself before you get scammed by such people.

The Chief of Staff (COS) at the General Headquarters, Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh who received the donation on behalf of the Military High Command expressed his appreciation to the team for their thoughtfulness. He further highlighted that the gesture would go a long way in building the spiritual growth of personnel.

The Executive Vice President of Theovision International, Mr Theodore Philip Asare noted that the electronic audio Bibles which come in various languages - Hausa, Ewe Ga, Twi and English were portable and easy to use wherever personnel may find themselves.

UNIFIL GHANBATT 88 INAUGURATES BASKETBALL COURT AT RMEICH

UNIFIL GHANBATT 88's Deputy Comanding Officer (DCO), Maj Benjamin Adjei has inaugurated a basketball court for Our Lady of Antonine Sisters School in Rmeich on Tuesday 17 May 2022.

The gesture formed part of GHANBATT's Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities aimed at assisting the local populace in their Area of Operational Responsibility (AOR) by supporting them in tackling some socio economic challenges.

The DCO, Maj Adjei in his remarks on behalf of the Commanding Officer (CO), Lt Col Benjamin Boamah reiterated that GHANBATT as part of its mandate was ready to assist the community whenever they call on them.

The Proprietress of the School, Sister Mary Nassar thanked GHANBATT for the gesture. She was appreciative of GHANBATT's support in the provision of portable water and indicated that the renovation of the court would enable the students train in a safe environment.

C-IN-C COMMISSIONS FOUR NEW OFFSHORE SECURITY VESSELS FOR NAVY

The President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned four brand new Offshore Security Vessels (OSVS) at the Naval Base, Sekondi on Friday, 25 February 2022.

The commissioning of the four 40-meter Offshore Security Vessels followed their recent acquisition through a lease agreement between the Ministry of Defence/Ghana Navy, Israel Shipyard Limited and the International Oil Companies with funding from GCB Bank PLC. This strategy forms part of Government's efforts to retool the Ghana Navy to enable them to provide dedicated security to offshore oil and gas infrastructure in Ghana's maritime domain as well as carry out any other security tasks in aid of national development.

The Commander-in-Chief in his address noted that, rising insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea and the West African sub-region required that the Ghana Navy being the lead maritime security agency receives all the needed support to carry out its statutory roles effectively.
The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul hinted in his address that plans to equip the Navy with more state-of-the-art ships are well advanced. He assured the President that good maintenance of the ships would be ensured to keep them operational to serve their purpose.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu on his part said the vessels would not only protect offshore petroleum installations, but was a step towards re equipping the Navy for the overall security of Ghana's territorial waters and development of the blue economy'.

The Managing Director of GCB Bank PLC, Mr Kofi Adomakoh, said financing the acquisition of the vessels was a good sign of productive collaboration between indigenous banks and state institutions for national development.

74TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 28TH FEBRUARY CHRISTIANBORG SHOOTING OBSERVED AT OSU

A memorial was held to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the 28th February Christianborg Crossroads Shooting incident at the Freedom Monument near the Black Star Square at Osu in Accra.

The Monday, 28 February 2022 ceremony is an annual event which is held in recognition of the 1948 incident that led to the killing of the three World War II veterans who were demanding their gratuity through a peaceful street protest. The three ex-service men, Sergeant Francis Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey lost their lives when the protest was intercepted on the orders of the then British Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Gold Coast Regiment, Sir Gerald Creasy.

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia who was the guest of honour, laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and People of Ghana while the CDS, Rear Admiral Seth Amoama and the Board Chairman of VAG, Major General C Yaachie (Rtd) laid wreaths on behalf of the Security Service and Veterans respectively.

VICE PRESIDENT DR BAWUMIA PAYS VISIT TO GAF ACCIDENT VICTIM

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia paid a visit to Maj Hanson Adu and his family at Burma Camp on Wednesday, 16 February 2022.

The purpose of the visit was to check up on his health and assure the officer of government's support. HE Dr Bawumia asserted that prior to his visit; he was monitoring Maj Adu's progress at the 37 Military Hospital. Maj Adu was one of the victims involved in the Vice President's convoy accident along the Tamale-Buipe road on Thursday 10 February 2022.

VISIT TO LATE SGT ZOWONOO WISDOM'S FAMILY

In a follow-up visit on Friday 18 February 2022, HE Dr Bawumia paid a courtesy call on the family of Late Sgt Zowonoo Wisdom. In his remarks, Dr Bawumia expressed his dismay and extended his heartfelt condolences and support to the family.

The Defence Minister, Hon Dominic Nitiwul in his remarks also conveyed his condolences to the wife and sought for God's protection, guidance and strength for the family.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ex WOI Tay thanked the Vice President and GAF for their immense support in their time of grief.

CDS RECEIVES OTUMFUO'S 20TH COMMEMORATIVE GOLD COIN

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama received Otumfuo's 20th Commemorative Gold Coin in a brief ceremony at Burma Hall in Burma Camp on Monday 21 February 2022.

The 24 karat Gold Coin which was presented by the E on 3 Group by the Head of Retail Banking at Access Bank, Madam Yvonne Antonio to CDS signifies the life-long legacy of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Il and serves as a vehicle to project the country's cultural heritage.

Vice Admiral Seth Amoama on receiving the award thanked Otumfuo for the honour and pledged an amount of GhC 50,000 to support the Otumfuo Educational Fund. He further commended him for his tremendous involvement in settling the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute.

Finally, dedicated the award to the gallant Officers, Men and Civilian Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their resilience in protecting the citizenry and maintaining peace and stability in the country.
