Hello Kings and Queens! Beautiful People everywhere, it’s your girl C.K. McGhee, and I am the host of Village Mentality, the Podcast.
✨✨✨✨

In this week’s episode, I’ll be talking about African-American Children: Experiencing Grief & Loss. While it has been relatively hidden, in our society there is a definitive gap when it comes to race, and more and more people are starting to understand the scope of this issue. Data shows that Black and Brown children are disproportionately impacted by grief: They are 2X more likely to have a father die and 3X more likely to have a mother die compared to White children.

In my segment, “Let’s Talk About It,” April is Stress Awareness Month. Stress is normal and everyone experiences it in response to situations considered threatening or dangerous. When you're stressed, your body responds by producing physical and mental reactions. These stress responses can be positive, keeping you alert to danger, motivated, or adaptable to new situations. Let’s talk About It.
✨✨✨✨

Also, check out who I’ll be highlighting in Black History Wednesday. As always there will be plenty of music from my musical jukebox!

In this week’s episode, I’ll be talking about Culture Identity in Mental Health. Our culture, beliefs, sexual identity, values, race, and language all affect how we perceive and experience mental health conditions. In fact, cultural differences can influence what treatments, coping mechanisms and supports work best for us. It is therefore essential for culture and identity to be part of the conversation as we discuss both mental health and mental health care. Let’s learn together how important it is for mental health professionals to understand one’s identity in allowing them to be comfortable to address it.

In this week’s episode, I’ll be talking about Crisis Response and Intervention. Mental health treatment and su***de prevention are critical healthcare issues for our country. Oftentimes, when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress, they will most likely interact with law enforcement instead of a mental health professional. Let’s learn together about the 3 core elements of the National Guidelines for Crisis Care.

Hello beautiful people!

June is National PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Awareness Month)

Although often associated with combat veterans, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can impact any person of any age after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Such traumatic events might include military combat, sexual or physical violence, natural disasters, or severe accidents.

The term “PTSD” first appeared in 1980 in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. However, earlier medical publications referred to conditions described as “soldier’s heart,” “shell shock,” and “war neurosis.” With the prevalence of PTSD in the military community, it is not surprising that the effort to create awareness was launched as a tribute to a service member. On June 27, 2010, PTSD Awareness Day was established in recognition of Staff Sergeant, Joe Biel, a National Guard service member who experienced PTSD after two tours in Iraq and died by su***de in 2007.

In 2014, the federal government designated the entire month of June as PTSD Awareness Month.

Through awareness and education we all can help in the efforts to de-stigmatize mental illness and normalize conversations around our mental health. Let’s learn how we can effectively support those who live with mental health conditions.

In this week’s episode, I’ll be talking about Mental Health in Rural America. While rates of mental illness are similar in rural areas compared to urban areas, there is a higher risk of su***de in rural communities, with nearly twice as many su***des in the most rural counties compared to urban. 1 in 25 adult Americans has a serious mental illness (SMI) in a given year, but people in rural areas are more likely to experience it and they face unique barriers to receiving treatment. Let’s talk about the 4 A’s of rural mental health.

Hello beautiful people!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Mental health awareness is the ongoing effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing our personal experiences. Often, because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people often suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated.

In the United States, nearly one in five adults have a mental illness or mental health condition. That's nearly 52 million people. However, mental health isn't just about having or not having a mental illness. Our well-being is affected by all aspects of our lives, and that, in turn, affects how we experience life, work, and time with our loved ones. Now, the conversation is more critical than ever. In 2021, the prevalent feeling of the year was languishing. BetterUp’s research found that more than 55% of workers weren't mentally ill, but they weren't thriving either.

As the pandemic brought physical health center stage in an unprecedented way, it was time for us to look at the other major components of well-being. The conversation around mental health awareness has never been as public, as prevalent, or as important. After all, building awareness is a critical ingredient to learning how to care for your mental health.

Mental health awareness is an important social movement to both improve understanding and increase access to healthcare.

Hello Kings and Queens! Beautiful People everywhere, it’s your girl C.K. McGhee, and I am the host of Village Mentality, the Podcast.
✨✨✨✨

In this week’s episode, I’ll be talking about the importance of Cultivating Compassion. One of the most important things to learn about cultivating compassion for yourself and others is that it can lead to relationships. As we focus more on “self” love, worth, compassion…etc., we work to establish on a daily basis a practice of self-care that allows us to do the things that we need to do in order to replenish all the energy that we give while caring for others. Let’s learn together the different ways that we can be more compassionate towards ourselves.
✨✨✨✨

In my segment, “Let’s Talk About It,” May is Mental Health Awareness, I’ll talk about 988, the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. It’s important that we know and understand how to utilize this resource when we or someone we know is dealing with a mental health crisis or emotional distress. Also, check out who I’ll be highlighting in Black History Wednesday. As always there will be plenty of music from my musical jukebox!
